Comparing the Sound of Barclay Crocker Dolby B Tapes to Vinyl
docb:
Just to clarify, your Repro was done some time ago and sent off to ATR Services. So for once we aren't the Bottleneck.

Yep

Thanks Xavier,
I think that once those Blackgates break in, most of that haze should disappear and the soundstage will get nice and deep.
I generally leave the decoder powered up all the time (it's pretty low wattage) and it take a lot of hours to get it sounding right.
Give that guitar trio tape a try. It sounds pretty darn good.
I really enjoy the BC's and while they're surprisingly good sounding, I don't think that they are any competition to the Tape Project tapes. My hopes in fact, are that they can supplement them and increase the joys of reel to reel ownership.
Speaking of Repros, how many are out there now?

I think we just finished number 16 which will hopefully be doing duty at CES in January, and we just got a request to start number 17 to go with an A807.

The guitar trio tape is spectacular. Very natural sound with lots of details. And the music is very nice too.
Unfortunately I can't leave the unit all of the time. You see, the way I leave home with peace of mind about my kids not getting shocked by any of my nine Bottlehead amps or my high voltage field coil speakers is by switching the complete circuit off. I could connect the Dolby unit to another circuit but then I would probably risk getting some ground loops as well as loosing the benefits of my power plant.
I'm really enjoying my Pavlov's Dolby. BC is a very comprehensive classical music compendium with a nice balance of styles, composers, orchestras and directors. Since last weekend it is very good sounding too.
