using reels with different hubs?
« on: June 02, 2010, 05:22:02 AM »
Hello everybody!
I'm a total newbie, here on this forum AND with tape machines.

I got an old Revox A77 and I'm starting doing things with it,
recording as well.

For now I don't have so many reels, I mean empty reels,
I was wondering if I can use two reels with different
hub sizes...
For example, I have a new empty reel with NAB hub,
but the only empty (take up) reel lying around I've got
now has a trident hub...

What happens if I record something that way?
Will this affect something?
And what if I play back a tape recorded from a
trident hub but the take up reel it's a NAB?

I've serched the forum but didn't find an answer
to this.

Thank you very much for your answers, and
sorry if these are dumb questions.

Cheers!
Laura

Hi Laura,
You can use different hubs w/o problem, as soon as the reels are of the same size. However, refrain from using different size of reels (e.g. 7" and 10.5") with this machine, for critical recordings/playback as this will affect the stability/range of tape tension, hence tape-head contact.

In other words, what matters is that the internal diameter of the reel, where the tape rolls on, is the same on both sides.

Best regards,
Tod

Many thanks, now I get it!

And many thanks to all the contributors of this forum, I'm reading all the tech-related topics and I hope to learn as much as I can.

Kind regards,
Laura
