Nagra TA
« on: January 13, 2011, 03:00:24 PM »
Salvaged from a scrap truck.
serial #00390
Seems to be in excellent condition except the cables from the control panel have been cut.
I'm quite certain the upper cable from the control panel goes to the side of the machine by the take up reel.
What about the lower one? (see attached photo)
My guess is it goes to BJ13 "RS-422" on the rear panel.
Can any TA users here confirm this?

I'm also looking for operation and service manuals.

Jeez, Dominick, that's a hell of a score. Looks like you got the trolley and the front panel...did it come with the overbridge too?

You guess correctly, that other cable goes to the RS422 port on the back, either directly or via the TA-RSA box which supports some of the more complex sync options.

We are working on the manuals issue and should have some help for you on that soon.

Yup, and all you really need for non-sync operation is the cable you have drawn. We just verified that last week on a deck that Paul bought that is waiting for a control panel, by connecting the control panel from mine.

Thanks all for the info.

Ki, your photos are most helpful, that's quite a beauty you have.
Paul, please keep me posted on progress with the manuals.

One of the studios' building maintenance men came to me saying I should check out the "scrap metal" on the curb.
Besides the TA were 2 Otari MTR 10 1/2" 4 tracks, a 35MM projector with lamphouse and lamphouse supply, a 16mm film edge coding machine and a Sony 4:2:2 digital time base corrector. Everything seemed complete.
3 fellows were loading it all into a truck. They had purchased it as scrap metal.
Several sawbucks and they let me take the TA.
Sadly I had no place to stash the Otari decks so I had to let them go.

Only thing missing on the TA is NAB hubs.

Hi Dominick:

The closest thing to your lucky score for me was for DocB to tell me about the Nagra T I had shown above for sale locally.

I do have the "latest" Nagra T Audio manual on a CD from Nagra USA I had purchased.  They have the operational manual for the T Audio with TC in hard copies (only) and their "best" Nagra T Audio manual available from Swiss (only) is for non-TC version... but it has complete schematics.

The NAB hubs are near impossible to obtain.  There is a pro studio surplus dealer in CA who might have the CINE adapters but the price was $400 per pair the last time I purchased them.  If you want a pair just to try your machine, please let me know.  I could loan a pair to you.

Jeff Jacobs at J-Corder showed me a new version of the Darklab "Revox style" NAB hub adapter at CES. Instead of the turned aluminum "chimney", it has a simple aluminum ring on top. I think it should fit the T's Cine hubs and ought to look pretty good on a T in the satin aluminum version he offers.

Hi Doc:

Oh...Maybe I missunderstood...  so, Dominick has the Nagra CINE adapters but missing the Revox type NAB Hubs for the reels...  For that matter, the Darklab hubs would be pretty on Nagra Ts.

It seems strange that the Cine hubs are so much more common than the NAB hubs until you realize that the tapes being edited were typically coming off of Nagra IVs. I didn't realize at the time how lucky I was to get the NAB hubs when I bought mine.

Yes, you are lucky to have the original NAB adapters for your Nagra T and I am lucky to be able to get the last pair that was available from Swiss.  Unfortuntely, Nancy at Nagra USA also told me that they no longer have the CINE adapters for Ts either.  I did see the Nagra IVs have similar adapters but don't know for certain if reel adapters for IVs can be used in Ts.

My friend with the "stuttering T" is still looking for documentation as well.

Unfortunately the only thing you can do is to take it to your care and drive to Nagra Switzerland.

Hi all,

The machine has a TAERS.
The RS422 cable to the control panel has a splitter that plugs into BJ13 on the rear panel of the machine.
The splitter has a cable (that's been cut) that goes to the control panel and a female DB9 connector.
The RS422 cable to the TAERS connects to the female DB9 of the splitter.
The cable to the TAERS is no problem to repair.
It has 8 individual conductors, each with a unique color and an overall shield.
The cable to the control panel, however, is not so easy to re construct.
It is 5 pair with an overall shield. There are 5 black wires in the cable.
The cable connects in the control panel via one 6 position and one 12 position green colored "amp" connectors labeled "P1" (6 position) and "P2" (12 position).
Drawing attached shows what I'm dealing with.
Does anyone have specific info regarding which black wire goes where?

Here are photos showing the RS 422 splitter that connects to rear panel BJ 13 and the green "amp" connectors P1 & P2 inside the control panel.
