A new compilation.
« on: February 09, 2011, 11:04:08 AM »
Respighi's Church Windows has been put out by Reference Recordings in a few different versions over the years. There is a 45 rpm version of Church Windows (RR-15), and there is a CD version that includes Poema Autumnale. Tam and Keith are planning a re-release of this album and for this they made the decision to combine Church Windows with Copland's Appalachian Spring Suite by the same Pacific Symphony Orchestra conducted by Keith Clark (RR-22), effectively combining the most moving pieces from two different albums. The two sessions were recorded in the same venue about 2-1/2 years apart (Santa Ana High School Auditorium). We have followed suit with this new compilation and the A reel of this album contains the Respighi while the B reel contains the Copland.

I was reviewing the Catalog page the other day and saw that Church Windows included Appalachian Spring. I was surprised to hadn't noticed that before. Now I know why!

In any case I like the decision. I love Copland and Appalachian Spring is among his best.

Thanks!

I too absolutely love Copland and Appalachian Spring in particular! I'm pretty sure I asked for it in the suggestion forum a while back.
Really looking forward to this one.

Back in September Paul reported that he and Keith Johnson met and transferred Church Windows. Now we hear there is another version coming out, a compilation to include Copland's Appalachian Spring Suite. Does this require yet another transfer session or was this done last September, too? What does this mean to the tape's release date? On January 20th TomR commented: "Clifford Brown arrived and Church Windows will arrive next week." Was that wishful thinking on TomR's part? It's a bit confusing. Will Series 3 bring us anymore "Best Of" albums?

John,

We transferred both the Respighi and the Copland at the same time. Most of the tapes have been duped, and the artwork is just about finished (as I understand...that's actually Doc's department.) I believe that these are in line to ship next, though I heard a rumor that there's a supply chain problem with one small part. Doc can update that when he has time. He's traveling right now for the HeadFi meet tomorrow.

We expect that the Series Three titles will be complete albums as they originally came out. But it's always possible that we'll surprise ourselves before we're done.

Appalachian Spring is one of my all time favorite compositions. Obviously, I'm very excited about this new compilation! I may even have to play side B first...

FWIW, TomR (me) does not believe in wishful thinking. I was also quoted incorrectly - I was told Church Windows would arrive in February, not next week. February is not over yet.

Paul,

Thank you for taking time to answer my question. On September 16th you posted the following: "Keith and I finally got a chance to get together and transfer the tapes for both Church Windows and Nojima Plays Liszt. We'll get started duplicating Church Windows next week, so it will probably be the next title shipped." There was no mention of Copland's Appalachian Spring Suite as part of the mix. It wasn't until February 9th (5 months later) that Doc mentioned, OBTW "Tam and Keith are planning a re-release of this album and for this they made the decision to combine Church Windows with Copland's Appalachian Spring Suite..." Then Doc went on to say that TTP would follow suit. This did not sound like something that was already 'in the can'. Perhaps Church Windows was not a big seller so combining it with Appalachian Spring would make sense from a business perspective but I think this should have been mentioned five months ago?

I certainly can't speak for others but is it any wonder people are not committing to Series Three before all the titles are settled on? I realize what you guys are doing is not easy work, far from it but an outlay of $3000 without any idea of what you'll end up with, or when, is not an easy decision, even with a 10 percent discount. Again I thank you for your time.

Regards,

John

Tom,

I may have posted the following in the wrong place so I'm post it here in reply to your quoted statement above.

The date of your post was Jan. 20 and you said "Church Windows will arrive next week", not sometime during the month of February. At the time of your post there were still eleven days left in the month of January. Perhaps I was mistaken about your wishful thinking but how did you came to the conclusion you would received Church Windows by the following week?

Week must have been a typo - Ellen told me in February. Pretty simple.

John,

Plenty of people are signing up for Series Three. Of course some people prefer to wait and see what the other titles will be. Everyone gets to make his own choice.

Regarding shipment, one thing that took some unexpected additional time was the slightly revised front cover and revised liner notes. I have a completed cover art file. It is the next print run we have scheduled, pending Tam's having a look at it first. We have some TP14 albums complete except for the artwork. Not all albums are completely packaged yet because we have run up against the latest worldwide shortage related to the reel to reel tape revival - the great flange nut famine of 2011. Romo has handled this purchase in the past and has set some things in motion to get more. He is currently away from the business for a week or two. I am also away from the office, on the road since last Thursday and will be returning in a few days. At that time I will be following up on a couple of paths he and I were pursuing to get these parts in stock ASAP.

Tom, I apologize if I offended you by quoting you. Also, when you stated "Church Windows" would ship in a week I wondered where you got your information; simple as that. I was under the impression one purpose of The Tape Forum was to announce such things as title shipment dates.

I don't know WHAT I was thinking when I wrote that. In fact we are actively working on one which would be drawn from two separate releases, and we are hopeful that we will be able to announce it soon.
