revox PR99 MK3 vs. revox c270 - help needed fast!
« on: January 29, 2012, 02:10:02 PM »
Hello everyone,

I'm totally new in the reel to reel world, and have one, hopefully easy question to answer for you.

Recently I bought my first PR99 MK3 for the purpose of live recording ONLY. The results are fantastic compared to digital.

Now it's been offered to me to exchange the PR99 for an C270 + 200 $.

They are both in NM condition, is it worth it? I'm mostly recording acoustic guitar, voices, and on the other side analogue synthesizers and various sound generators.
Low noise floor, frequency range, reliability is what I need.

Also, the head on the C270 is 1mm in better shape.

thank you!
I need to make the decision pretty fast.

Labosh

Arian Jenson is a very knowledgeable member here and regarding these machine. After reading his comments, you might wish to contact him directly.
IMHO, the deal of "upgrading" your machine for $200 seems like a good deal if the heads on the 270 are better (it would cost would be at least that much to have all your heads relapped).
If the machines are from the same seller, I would ask for a week or so to confirm that the C270 is working as well as your PR99.

Revox PR99 is better option than C270 by service and maintenance reason:

- C270 is complicated small footprint recorder - if something goes wrong it does, and is very difficult to service. Assembly and disassemble is a nightmare.

- PR99 is much more user friendly design, everything inside is accessible for repair.

They have pretty much identical sound quality.

Stick with PR99 and forget about C270

The tape handling capability of C270 is way beyond PR99, which is a repacked B77, with MPU for zero locating. C270 was introduced a little later then STUDER A807. They share similar tape tension control. Speed change over and acceleration is super fast!

They belong to different generations. Sonically C270 use NE5532 while PR99 use LF353.

I had two of C270's and A77, B77. Later on I also acquired STUDER's A807 and A810. I should say that C270 is more close to A807.

Any reel to reel tape recorder was subject to transport damage. Download service manuals before you got them. Try to locate any damage before plug in is the rule.
