Recording meters for Studer A807
« on: July 05, 2015, 03:16:40 AM »
Hello all.

Can anyone recommend me some meters for recording? My A807 doesn't have meters you see. If anyone has some that they are not using please get in touch.

Many thanks

I don't know anything about the 807 and am surprised that it doesn't have meters.

VU meter "panels" are available that have 600 ohm inputs and would have the capability to display (and adjust for) 0VU with an input level like +4db (kind of an industry standard).  The meters on these panels "should" have a flat frequency response out to 20 or 30 Khz, so you could also use them for observing playback frequency response while playing a test tape.

Some came with them, some didn't.

The A807 came in many variations. Many were sold without meters, as they were used in studios with mixing desks. The commonest standard A807 stereo (butterfly 0.75mm head) or 2 track (2mm head) came without meters, although one could have built in meters or a meter bridge at extra cost. You cannot retrofit meters into the front panel of a meterless A807, as far as I know.

I have bought an A807/II recently and have bought a cheap Tascam M208 mixer (which has VUs) to adjust and monitor the record input levels.

Yeow, for that much they could put a little furniture polish on the endcaps.

Price is high but this is what you need:

Ki

Problem is that you need the sockets on the top panel to plug into the VU control panel & VU audio sockets. If you have the standard A807-0.75 stereo version or A807-2F 2 track version, they have the sockets blanked off on the top plate. The A807 doesn't have modular cards like the A80/810/820, and hence I don't think you can adapt the non-metered A807s to accept an A807 meter bridge. Please correct me, if I'm wrong.
