Upgrading Studer A807 15ips to 30ips
« on: August 31, 2015, 06:03:18 PM »
Hi,

I have a studer A807 MK1 standard, and I was wondering if it is safe to upgrade it to 30ips.

From what I see, in order to set up the Studer A807 to 30ips it is necessary to:
1) Change the jumper in the control panel to HS mode
2) Modify jumpers W5/W6 in the audio control board to set the correct EQ parameters for High Speed.

Everything else in the machine seems to work with 30ips.

My question is, do I need a different capstan to support 30 ips? I currently have the 1.021.605.81, and nowhere in the documentation or in the parts list there is a mention that a special capstan is needed for the A807 to work with 30ips, but that is, for example, the case of the A810. That machine lists two different capstans (2 pole 15ips, 4 pole 30ips).

Anybody has done the experiment?

Actually, you would need a 2 pole motor to reach 30ips.  2 pole capstan motor will cover 7.5, 15 and 30 ips whereas 4 pole motor will cover 3.75, 7.5, and 15 ips.
