Teac 40-4 Lifter adjustment
« on: January 23, 2007, 12:37:47 AM »
Hi...does anyone have any ideas about how to adjust the tape lifters on a Teac 40-4.  The service manual I have mentions everything else but lifter adjustment and I seem to have a left lifter that doesn't lift all the way during fast fwd./Rewind...

Any thoughts/direction appreciated...thanks, Hopkins

I got this answer from the Yahoo RTR forum and thought I'd post it here as well, in case someone else comes across the problem and needs Help...

Hello Hopkins,
Sam here, The lifters do not have an adjustment- what you may have is
hard grease in the interconnecting mechanism OR if you were in the
machine changing the capstan shaft or dealing with the pinch roller
linkage, it is possible to assemble the pinch roller arm linkage so that
it does not properly actuate the lifters. If the pinch roller is down
then both lifter are to be down as well and there is just a small spring
that returns the lifters to their resting (down) position. They are
greased, so that should this lubrication become hard, as does the grease
for the Pinch Roller Linkage, then it is time to clean the assembly and
apply new grease. One other error that is made at times depending if
this feature is mounted is the use of the two step Pinch roller. In the
second step where it is lifted up there is suppose to be lifter defeat
in this as this is a mechanical cue feature that some do not realize is
on. The Pinch Roller in NON-Cue mode should be all the way down. There
is a cue lifter lever also that has a catching mechanism with a spring-
this also needs to be deactivated as I looked at one of the 40-4 I have
here. To find out what the problem really is short of one of the cue
levers being activated, try pulling down the lifter with some slight
pressure using a small screw driver- If it comes down slowly then it is
grease, if it is hard stuck in the up position, the linkage may be out
of position. Just a note- both lifters should act the same- either be up
or down, it is not normal for one to be up and the other down.
