TP-02, 03, 05 and 08
« on: March 12, 2008, 05:33:09 PM »
Last week I had a chance to listen to 02 and 03. This is becoming a religious experience: put the kids to sleep, had dinner, disconnect the phones, serve scotch, rewind tapes, light out: boom!

I loved 03: fantastic music and great sound. There's a track where some drums are hit with a hand: you can feel the texture of the drum!

04: you guys will have trouble improving this. One would have trouble listening to brass like this, even if going to listen to the LSO live you would have trouble finding this strength and liveliness. This is what the TP is about! Kudos, kudos, kudos to Paul, Mike and Dan: you are the best.

05: When do you expet to ship this one?

08: What does 2008's catalog will have for us? I have my check ready!

Kinda makes it hard to listen to other media huh? One of the things that really gets me is the way that it elevates the level of whatever it's being played through. I see posts all the time where people are discussing what part of the audio chain has the most impact. People who answer, "the source material" are few and far between. I keep out of those kind of discussions. I just wish I had a little 2 track/15ips playback machine that I could load a 7" reel with just 2 or 3 cuts to send to these guys. Wow, maybe I've finally found a reason to buy that Nagra 4s that I've always lusted after.

Well, and now you can. Sadly, you can pick them up for a few hundred dollars on eBay. Stefan must be rolling in his grave...

Regarding Nagras,

Where ? When? I have been looking (well not every day) on Ebay and see worn beat up non-stereo film machines going for or at least people attempting to get thousands for them. I would love to have a not even cosmetically perfect one that was standard 2 track stereo, never mind the film sync stuff, that worked OK for even $1K !

Re: Nagras

I had two Nagra's when I was in Mississippi.  They are a work of art and made beautifully, plus they work like clockwork!  I also had 2 x adaptors which are very clever in that you fit them on to the back of the deck and can then play 10.5 inch reels.  These adaptors are extremely hard to get hold of and probably worth a bomb, but back in 2002 they were each about $1300US.  We purchased them from Location Sound but I have just looked and they don't appear to have any for sale.  I would encourage you to get in touch with them and they can always keep you on their books when any come in.  They came with warranties and were in tip top condition.
Cheers

I think that's what separates the wheat from the chaff when it comes to Nagras. The film industry supports a large rental/lease sub industry. The lV's that show up for cheap on eBay usually come from them. During the last few years when they've almost all been replaced by Sound Devices SD722/744 digital recorders (which are very cool too)so the rental units have been sold. Lots of these suppliers have an in house shop that maintains and calibrates each machine as it comes back from the field. Some jobbed this out and repaired them as demand required (just keeping one or two serviced machines on their shelves). The ones that were serviced in house usually come with better warranties than lots of new consumer gear. But, you pay for it,.. or at least more than your everyday eBay machine. Even at these higher prices, I think you're getting off pretty cheap.
