Anyone know what causes a muffled type sound? Sounds like it is coming through a wall. Technics rs1506

Thanks

The stock suggestion is to first, clean you heads and tape path. Dirty heads can prevent proper contact of the tape to the heads. When you clean the heads of a Technics machine, be sure and get the outside edge which is obscured from view by the head shields. If that doesn't help (but it needs to be done at least every 10 tapes or so) it could also be a tape tension problem. To check this, play a tape and listen as you put a finger on the supply reel to increase the back tension ( the supply reel is trying to turn in the opposite direction of the tape motion). If the problem clears up with this, you need to have the tension adjusted.
Another common problem is the 1/2 track to 1/4 track switch on the headblock. Try switching it back and forth a bunch of times while listening to the playback. If it sound like that's what it is, you need to remove the headblock (3 silver hex screws) remove the black plastic guard (one phillips screw) and squirt some DeOxit into the switch 9being careful not to get it on the heads which you just carefully cleaned. When you have your headblock off, it's a dandy time to really examine your heads an tape path. I use a 10x magnifier.
A couple of questions.
Have you eliminated problems downstream ?(try listening to the headphone out)
Do you have a service manual? ( must have even if you don't plan on doing your own work)
Have any mods been performed on your machine?
