Moody Blues R2R Tape
« on: September 30, 2008, 09:52:22 PM »
Does anyone know if Ampex produced a Moody Blues R2R tape of the album Days of future Past at 7 1/2 ips?

I've only seen 3 3/4 ips.
I can't tell you how often I've seen old tapes for sale and thought, "I gotta have that one!" and scrolled down the ad and seen 3 3/4 and been bummed. Dylan, the Stones, Hendrix,.. Hendrix's ( I have to brag) " Are You Experienced" 7.5 ips is on it's way to me now! Of course, the proof will be in the pudding but it's the first one I've seen at this speed.
Some rock tapes have been produced at both speeds. But some of the European/British dubs don't sound real great. I think that MCA/Warner tapes come in two flavors and the lime green labeled ones may have IEC eq.

If it is a quad tape played on a 1/4 track stereo deck you will hear the front 2 channels of the quad mix.
If played on a 1/2 track (2 track) stereo deck you would theoretically hear front and rear left from left and front and rear right from right but nothing would be in exact alignment and the balance of the 2 tracks might not be right as well as high frequency and phase issues.

If you do have a quad copy of Days of Future Past it would be great to hear. I have the quad cartridge (as well as the 3 3/4 stereo reel) and the quad mix is fun if not exactly high fidelity. Is there a thread regarding quad open reels here somewhere?
In the other thread here, about sticky shed, it is my quad reel copy of Seventh Sojourn that is giving me troubles with oxide shed.
