Technics RS-1500
« on: February 14, 2009, 11:35:06 PM »
Hello everyone,

I've been fortunate enough to find an incredible deal on a Technics RS-1500 from a college radio station. I believe they used it for a couple years before switching completely to digital.

As much as I like to consider myself a little bit of an enthusiast, or at least very interested in the technology, I'm afraid I've decided to sell it in order to purchase something a bit more useful to my studio.

I'm not trying to sell the tape machine here, but I really have no clue how much these things are worth. I got it for nearly free and I know it's worth more than that. Does anybody have any suggestions on a fair rate?

I found this site selling one for $3995

Thank you,

-Andre

It's dependent entirely on the current condition of the machine. They were around $1500 new. For a long time, paying half that for a mint machine was the going rate. For a machine in perfect working order and mint ( most machines that are cosmetically mint will need a good bit of work) they went for close to $1k. The machine that you've pointed out was stripped completely and every system rebuilt. There's at least $2k worth of work done to that machine. On eBay, most of these machines start at around $400 and depending on the condition and your return policies and feedback, it might not get a bid, or it could sell for as much as $1200.
BTW, two years at any radio station can be a lifetime for any machine (collage stations are the worst).
The only real way is to try.

Thanks for responding!!

Great, that gives me a much better idea.
To me everything seems to run rather smoothly, .. it may need some cleaning, but other than that I can't think of anything wrong with it.
