Otari MX 5050 BII2 Schematics

Hi All,

I have an Otari MX 5050 BII2 and need the schematics in order to troubleshoot the CH1 Record Circuit. All the other circuitry seems fine and yet CH1 will not record. No loose wires to the head either. Thankx in advance.

Have you pulled the boards and cleaned the contacts? Also the all the switches and pots will probably a need cleaning.

Steve, the jpg's that bob posted are for the BIII which I think are differant than the BII. I have section X with all of the circuit diagrams in pdf (4.64mb) for the BII2. If any one would like them pm me your email.

Section X has two schematic for the repro and record amps. A10620B schematic is the BII-2 / BII-4  and the A10680C schematic is for the BII-F which is a full track mono version.

Wow, that was quick! Thanks Steve for the links. I have the operating User Manual, Calibration Procedure, Parts list, Specs and Speed Control Documents. I'll check out the other link as well. Thanks Brad, I'll pm you.

I have been using the MX  5050 for digitizing recordings made over 25 years or so of a Bushman / Koi language. They were recorded in the Kalahari by my mentor Professor Traill of Wits University, sadly now "Gone to the West" as the Bushmen say.

I decided to have some fun at my 54th Birthday party by playing the music off the Reel to Reel and tha't when I found out that CH1 was not recording.

That sounds like a fantastic project. Are you archiving for the University then?
I'm alway more than happy to help anyone in the restoration/archiving community since I believe that the work done by these folks benefit mankind in general and the generations 'a comin'.

I have the schematics now thanks to Brad. Time to track down the errant electron!

I'm doing the archiving for the University of Tokyo and the Max Plank Institute. One of Tony Traill's doctorate students is from Japan and he set up the funding. Amazing to see him walking around the Kalahari speaking !xoon. We truly are becoming a global tribe!

I have tried downloading that manual, but after it downloads I get a "windows cannot open this file" error.  Is there a trick to opening this file after it has been saved to my computer?  Or is there a better source to download a manual for an 8 Track 50/50?

Some of them are .rar compressed files so you need a program that opens them. They have some free rar programs if you do a search.

Thanks, I downloaded a "rar" program and that did the trick.  My 50/50 is one of the earlier models, but it seems it seems to follow this MkIII manual pretty closely.

Those pic's look like one of the machines I used at Blue Diamond Studios back in the 1980's. Nice sounding machine... better than some of the 2" ones I used back then.

ya ought to take a look at Endino's site where he compares various decks, note where he states that the Nirvana Bleach record was done on one of those:

I agree with the comment on the MCI's - they sounded like cardboard to me. And i'm no golden ears kinda guy:
