Tape Tech / warped reels?
« on: February 28, 2011, 10:44:22 PM »
OK,
about half of all the tape project tapes i receive have warped reels in which the tape scrapes against one edge of the reels.  is this normal?  what is the best way to correct it short of brutally trying to flatten them?

Suggestion Box / Fleetwood Mac

I was listening to a Japanese LP pressing of "Rumours" that had an incredible sound.  All the tracks are solid hits and would be an excellent selection for tape especially since there is a paucity of classic rock from that era (I don't think The Band's "Stage Fright" does justice.  The other LP would be the self titled LP that contains "Landslide" and "Rhiannon."

Suggestion Box / Natalie Merchant: Tigerlily

Hello all,
I've been listening to the Mobile Fidelity LP release of Natalie Merchant's Tigerlily on 45 RPM and never was as emotionally moved by the whole presentation (especially Natalie's voice) as I am with this release.  It would be an amazing sounding tape.  Any other takers?  Tape Project gentlemen, I hope you hear me.  I appreciate your work.

I couldn't agree more with Tea for the Tillerman.  It is one of the greatest albums of all time across any genre (and one of the greatest sounding recordings).  I am also a big fan of Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits and I think On Every Street is often an overlooked album of theirs.  The vinyl of both is awesome.  I second the motion and hope the guys at the Tape Project are listening.  We need some Led Zeppelin also.

General Discussion / Re: A Couple of Questions
« on: May 13, 2010, 11:25:48 AM »
Hi Rocco,
I'm relatively new here as well.  I have been a fan of tapes since I played with my dad's old reel to reel machine and always wished that there would be new material and new technology because I always knew it would be better than the best digital out there.  Well, I took the full plunge.  I got my Phase 5 deck from United Home Audio over a month ago and my Tape Project tapes have been coming and let me tell you, the realism blows you away.  With the Phase 5 deck, I have also made some sampler tapes from some of my vinyl collection and the copy is closer to the original than any other media transfer I have tried including CD and 1/4" quarter track reel to reel.  It is so satisfying in its presentation that I don't feel I am missing anything from the original recording.  The Tape Project tapes, however, are in a league of their own.  I was skeptical about them at first because who wants to make an $11,000 investment and risk only having 20 titles.  Well, I feel that it is safe to say that more are on their way.  As far as United Home Audio, the machine is easy to operate like the old school home use reel to reels but it is built like a tank and the inner workings of it are like those of a studio machine.  It's like a hybrid:  the best of both worlds.  I used to listen to 80% vinyl and 20% CD.  Now it's 50% tape, 45% vinyl, and 5% CD to give you an idea.  Greg at UHA has been very helpful and patient in answering my questions via telephone and e-mail and he responds quickly with any technical support (I am just an amateur as well).  It is higher maintenance than CD or LP but worth it.  No regrets here.  It's an eye (and more importantly an ear) opener.

Suggestion Box / Mark Knopfler/Emmylou Harris: All the Roadrunning
« on: May 03, 2010, 06:15:41 AM »
This recording mastered by Stan Ricker on vinyl is perhaps one of my favorite recordings of all time.  It has something for everyone on it and it would probably push our beloved format to the max.  It would sound awsome I'm sure and it probably wouldn't be difficult to license.  What does everybody think?  Please consider it.

Hi all,
I was listening to Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes LP and it sounds fantastic.  This would sound amazing on tape.  It would be a great addition to Series 3.  Any thoughts?

I bet Jimmy Page would go for it.  Asking would never hurt.

Suggestion Box / Led Zeppelin anyone?
« on: April 14, 2010, 04:41:38 AM »
Hello all,
I posted some suggestions for series 3 previously.  Among these was Led Zeppelin's first album.  This would be a killer and would be the way to go for a rock selection.  All due respect to The Band's Stage Freight, Led Zeppelin would do more justice on tape.  Anyone else with me?

General Discussion / Re: Building a Music Room
« on: January 22, 2010, 09:50:52 PM »
Hello all,
I moved into my first new home just over 2 years ago and built the basement into a 2 channel listening room from scratch.  Some good resources that I used were Robert Harley's Guide to High End Audio book, the Cardas website, and ASC tube trap company from which I order and had installed wall damp treatments between 2 layers of staggered drywall on the walls and ceiling.  I was able to have 16x26ft room with a 10 foot average sloped ceiling (spreads out resonnant nodes in the bass frequencies-I recommend sloping as much as you can about 1 foot.  I had 2 layers of R38 insulation with a layer of air for the ceiling separating it from the floor in the kitchen above it.  I had a separate electrical line for this with 5 shunyata venom outlets installed on the line.  I love it.  The only change I would recommend is installing duct board in the ceiling above the 2 layers of insulation because believe it or not, if someone stomps hard enough in the kitchen, you can still faintly hear it if there is no sound in the listening room but even this is barely noticable.  I hope this helps.

Sorry all.  My name is Taj Madiwale and I have no affiliation in the recording business.  I'm just an enthusiast and new Tape Project subscriber.  Some other suggestions I have are

Cat Stevens:  Tea for the Tillerman
Bob Dylan:  Desire
Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris:  All the Roadrunning

I hope you guys consider a few of these.
Thanks

Suggestion Box / Series 3 suggestions
« on: January 18, 2010, 05:38:11 AM »
OK, I am a new member and just ordered series 1 and 2 tapes.  I always admired my dad's reel to reels and I have always wanted a way to buy brand new ones so the Tape Project is a dream come true since I was 12.  That being said, I must say I do like classical and jazz but I find old school rock missing from the collection (except for The Band's Stage Fright).  Here are my suggestions (sorry if some are obvious and may be difficult to license, but it's my 2 cents worth):
Miles Davis:  Kind of Blue
Miles Davis:  Sketches of Spain
Dave Brubeck:  Time Out
Pink Floyd:  Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd:  The Wall
Led Zeppelin:  first album (to hear "Babe, I'm gonna leave you" on tape would blow my mind!)
Norah Jones:  Come away with me
Tori Amos:  Little Earthquakes
Patrica Barber:  Cafe Blue
Pearl Jam:  Vitalogy
R.E.M.:  Automatic for the people
Madeleine Peyroux:  Careless Love
Alanis Morissette:  Supposed former infatuation junkie

OK, what do you think?
