General Discussion / Re: Anyone have this?
« on: April 16, 2011, 08:29:08 PM »
I've been so busy changing capacitors I forgot the schematic is on the bottom of the unit. I'm so dumb.
Anyway, I tried some 10uf 16V Panasonics in one and some Elnas in the other model 100. The Elnas sound great.
Thanks ironbut.

General Discussion / Anyone have this?

Anyone have a schematic for an Advent model 100? I have the one for 100A but it's different.

Hey jeri.

I actually have all three units running. The 100A was fixed and calibrated and it's the quietest of the three, probably due to calibration. It has all new caps. It's not suited for mixing of a processed and unproccessed signal because the 2 channels probably use the same section for the dolby. The 100's are different and they have separate channels for dolby. The 100 I got last week looks like it was well cared for and I see a number of parts were replaced individually. I just finished recapping the other 100 and it seemes to be OK. I'll be sending it off to be calibrated in the future.
The manual mentions that one of the side effects of dolby, high frequency loss, can be a benefit in some cases. It says it can be used as a high filter. That's basically what I'm doing by mixing the dolby and non-dolby sound through a mixer.
I don't know about the Barclay Crocker and Ampex Dolby Tapes but I would think these Advents can be useful to anyone interested in tapes. They bring out low overtones in a nice way and they sound much better than low eq boost, to my ears anyway.
Atlas Audio repair did an excellent job.

I'll let you know jeri. I missed the fedx guy today but I should get the 100A on Tuesday. Atlas Audio repair said they are doing a total recap. If you're farmiliar with the 100/100A series they have 6(5?) boards that pop in and out. I'm going to recap one of the 100's with higher grade caps, Panasonic-Nichicon-Elnas, to see if there is any difference. I'd like to replace other components on the output board.
I'll post my findings (just by listening) over the next couple weeks. There may be a burn-in time for the new electrolytics. I got a third 100 just a few days ago in excellent condition and it's working on both channels. I'll try to compare all three units and record them.

General Discussion / Re: CD's from cassettes

Well, I finally got through the whole process of Create Space. A couple of the CD's are waiting approval. I guess I'll be doing this myself.

I have 3 Advents- 2 100A's and a 100. I'm having one of the 100A's recapped and I'll probably do the others myself. Once cassette tapes have been encoded with Dolby B it's hard to decide what to do. I finally got around to trying mixing the encoded and non-encoded sound in a small mixer before going to the computer.
If anyone is interested I'll let you know how the Advent sounds after a total recap.

I use a Firebox for ins and outs to computer. It's not a pro-spec card and ones that are generally start around several hundred dollars+ used. Some brands to look at would be RME, Focusrite, and maybe an Emu 1616M. I don't know much about the higher-end cards. As far as software, if you just want to control fades, volume and spacing between songs you might be able to use something free like Audacity or cheap like Goldwave possibly. Audio editors all sound about the same so it's the features that separate them price-wise.
If you check out the reviews of hardware at different sites like Zzounds you can get an idea of what's what.

General Discussion / CD's from cassettes
« on: January 21, 2011, 10:16:49 PM »
I'm transferring a bunch of cassettes and some stuff on RTR to be made into CD's. These are live performances of family members and the music is copyrighted. I need someone to design the CD jackets and sell the CD's. What would companies who do this be called? Distributors? Media?

Thanks for any advice,
Steve

I finally got this sorted out and decided to put the CD's on Createspace.

I'll have to look into that. I'll start with the composers that would fall into public domain.
Most of the recording were done at the universities where they worked and they were put on cassettes from reel to reels.
It's all solo piano, two pianos or one piano-four hands.

I'm making CD's out of classical music concerts my parents have done over the last 40 years. There are about 20-25 hours of music on cassettes and reels. They would like to make them available to sell but I don't know anything about selling, distribution, marketing, etc.....
Can someone tell me how to go about this?

I gave it a good cleaning with contact cleaner but no go. I also checked the services resourses but didn't see anything about repairs on this kind of component.
I'll have to keep looking.
Thanks.

Update-

I got the Teac An-80 today and tried it out. It does what it's supposed to and being able to adjust channels individually is a big help. I'm still waiting for the Advent 100A to arrive.
