Events / Reel Tape Workshop in Berkely, CA April 25
« on: March 20, 2019, 09:57:55 PM »
We are going to be taking part in a Reel Tape Workshop on April 25th. This consists primarily of a training that ATR Service Corp. has been presenting a couple of times per year at their York, PA headquarters. They have held it in other locations, but for several years it has not been presented on the West Coast. We can thank Tim Marutani and Nick Doshi for sponsoring the event and getting them out west again.

It's a day-long workshop that covers the basics on the technology of tape machines, and a thorough explanation of alignment, with practical demonstrations that all participants may take part in. We will also have a visit from Greg Orton, owner of Flux Magnetics, and possibly other surprise treats.

ATR Service Corp. is one of the key technical resources we rely on to keep all our machines running properly. They have been involved on the pro side for over three decades. Now they are providing support for the high end playback market as well. They work on Ampex ATR's, as their name implies, but they work on all brands of studio machines. The information presented in the workshop will apply to any brand of machine.

Tape Project co-founder Michael Romanowski is providing the venue: his mastering lab located within the Fantasy Studios complex in Berkeley, CA. After the workshop there will be time for some music listening in Michael's main room.

The cost to attend is $500. For more information, or to sign up, you may contact Tim Marutani at (510) 652-1911 or Nick Doshi at www.doshiaudio.com/reel-tape-workshop.

In an effort to control spammers we have had to lock down the process of joining the forum. The best way to begin the process at this point is just to email info at tapeproject dot com with a request and a few words about your interest in tape playback in the home.

Willy and the Poor Boys / New music video for "Fortunate Son"
« on: June 28, 2018, 12:53:01 PM »
Concord, the label that owns the Creedence Clearwater Revival albums, is doing some promotions to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of the first CCR album. This includes a music video of the song "Fortunate Son." Even though that particular song didn't appear on the first CCR album, it's a worthy song and someone made an excellent video, which you can see here:

Of course if you want to hear the song at its absolute best, we refer you to TP-022, Willy and the Poor Boys, on 15 IPS reel to reel tape.

Doc & Merle Watson--Never The Same Way Once

You'll find it on the website in the Roots category.

Now that we have shipped TP-030, Doc Watson, to all charter subscribers, the Series model and the Subscription model are no more.

What does this mean going forward? For most of us, it means absolutely nothing. For the last several years most customers have been purchasing without any reference to the Series, and that will continue to be the case. We'll try to have everything in stock, and you buy what you want. Simple, really.

We feel a special gratitude to our Charter Subscribers, and we have a couple of things in mind for them. We'll be reaching out to this select group directly to explain, rather than discuss it here. But one thing I will state here: Charter Subscribers will be able to get future purchases with the serial number to match their existing albums.

Tape Project Albums - general / TP-030 Doc Watson now being duped
« on: September 02, 2017, 06:31:09 PM »
The elves here at The Tapeshed are hard at work preparing our next release: Doc Watson/Never The Same Way Once/Live At The Boarding House May 1974.

You can read some of the background here: http://www.sfgate.com/music/article/LSD-king-Owsley-Stanley-s-Sonic-Journals-11209700.php#photo-13030458

Doc Watson, along with his son Merle and a bass player, appeared in a four night run at San Francisco's fondly remembered night club The Boarding House. (Bonus trivia content: The Boarding House occupied the theater which had previously been the first location of Coast Recorders.) The shows were all recorded by the Grateful Dead's legendary engineer Bear (Owsley Stanley.) Now for the first time these recordings are being released to the public.

The Owsley Stanley Foundation, which has control of the original master tapes, has made its arrangements with Doc Watson's estate, and they just put out a seven CD box set of the entire four night run, and are doing a 2-LP release of one particular night's show. And they are allowing us to put out a tape that incorporates the same program as the LP.

The duping is almost finished, and the flanges are coming along. However due to one unusual circumstance it's hard to give a firm date for the release. This is the first time that we aren't designing the artwork in house. The graphics firm that did the art for the CD box set is also doing the design for the LP and for us. They do great work, but that means we don't have control of when it's ready.

I'm in the shop today working on the LP mastering, so I'm hearing the program again, and getting excited all over again about getting the tapes finished and shipped out to our subscribers. It's absolutely marvelous music-making, interspersed with just a bit of Doc's country humor. I can already tell that this one is going to go into regular rotation at my house (after everyone else gets it--Romo and I don't get our personal copies until all the subscribers do.)

I'll post an update shortly when I can narrow down the release date.
