Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Tape head to preamp cable
« on: February 19, 2007, 08:34:55 PM »
Thanks, everyone.

I just found a few feet of Belden 1695A in the closet, so I think I'll begin my experimentation with that if I can find a way to get it out of the headblock!  It's almost identical to 1694A but its insulation is teflon instead of polyethylene.  Maybe my next experiment will be a twisted pair of Silver Van den Hul tonearm cable that I'm about to remove from my turntable!

I'm curious as to what everyone likes in a tape head to preamp cable.  Low capacitance coax (is ther anything that's small diameter?)?  How about a twisted pair of teflon insulated, small gauge, silver tonearm-type cable?

What are you using, and how is it working out for you?

In what ways will a tape head > preamp cable differ from a phono cartridge > preamp cable?

Thanks,
Kevin

Sorry about the name thing and thanks for all the info so far.  I must admit that I did not read the rules before I posted the question!

Paul, the answer to all of your questions is "yes."
The model is a 1506 which is supposed to have a 1/4 track record and play head plus an additional 1/2 track repro head, so at least it looks like the deck hasn't been messed with in this regard.

I wonder if the two models here (1506 and 1520) just have the repro heads wired oppositely.  Hopefully someone has a manual for a 1506 so we can know.  Actually, I'm not all that concerned with which is R & L because this will be revealed by listening to a familiar tape.  The biggest concern that I have so far is getting the phase correct for each channel.

While we're on the subject of wiring heads, what's a good, shielded wire to run to te Seduction?  Any recommendations as to where I can get some without buying it in a huge quantity?

Thanks again,
Kevin

Thanks, Doc!

Much appreciated.

You said:
1/2 track:
one channel is brown + yellow -
the other channel is blue + black -

1/4 track:
one channel is white + yellow -
the other channel is red + black -

OK.  Two heads on my deck have those color wires going to them.   The head with the brown, yellow, blue, and black wires appears to have two THIN bands on the heads surface which are not centered on the head.  I would *think* that this is what the 1/4 track head should look like.

The other head, with the white, yellow, red, and black wires has two THICK bands that are centered on the head's surface.  I would *think* that this is what a 1/2 track head would look like.

Am I confused as to what the 1/2 and 1/4 track heads should look like, or is my deck wired differently?

I'm not sure if this would help or not, but the head with the brown, yellow, blue, and black wires is the last head that the tape touches before the take up reel, and the head with the white, yellow, red, and black wires is the first head that the tape touches after it comes off the source reel.

Thanks again!

I have a 1506 and am trying to figure out what pins are what on the 1/4 track and 1/2 track playback heads.  My goal is to wire them directly to a Seduction.

Can someone with experience tell me what is R, L, and ground on these heads?

I would really appreciate it.  Thanks.
