Title: Iron Butterfly - In a Gadda da Vida
Post by: xcortes on May 06, 2010, 10:29:46 PM
When I was a kid there were only three rock albums in father's collection. The Who's Quadrophenia, The Beatles' Magical Mistery Tour and Iron Butterfly's In a Gadda da Vida.

I just listened to itthe last of them in lp (not my father's which is long gone). In  addition to the music being outstanding the level of detail and sonics are very, very good.

It would make for a killer TP album. And, considering the demographics of my fellow TPers, a very popular one too (I think!).

Seems as if I am in a running commentary on the suggestion list lately. Thanks for bringing up things I have not heard in a while.
I listened to it again last night. I am amazed at why the title cut was that popular in it's day. Must have been the drugs, which I never had the benefit(?) of while listening to this era music. It does go on and on with the signature riff and fairly ordinary blues based guitar solos, I didn't remember the panning of the drums around during their solo nor the organ solo quote of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (sort of). Very psychedelic. Biggest surprise is how "pop-ish" some of the side 1 songs are by comparison. Not sure if I ever listened to side 1 all the way through. The first side 1 song organ again comes dangerously close to quoting "Light My Fire". As to the sonics, my copy, acquired somewhere long after the fact has no outer sleeve and looks as if it spent some quality time on someones floor. After washing and cleaning it still plays - sort of. The recording quality seems rather typical of rock of the era - not that spectacular, but I can't judge by my copy. Perhaps the tape master is amazing.
