I'm not interested in the A77 mods but I know someone who is. He's a tech friend who has been making some transcriptions for me on his A77. He has two so that he can modify one while still spinning reels. I am sure he would appreciate any pointer from you I could pass on Charles.

Brilliant Corners / Re: Brilliant Corners is a gem!
« on: February 03, 2010, 06:23:10 AM »
I first heard the title track on a radio broadcast from Radio Bruxelles. I was 15 at the time and it stunned me.
Playing TP-013 and I am stunned again.
I'll say nothing about the sonics but just observe that I am experiencing very powerful emotions.
My G-d, the outlay is worth it!
15 again...

I think Kostas is down to just one SM8 now. Perhaps keeping it for old time's sake?

The relentless logic of digital recording prevailed :o(

General Discussion / Re: The Joy of the Tape Project
« on: January 02, 2010, 05:32:10 AM »
After many weeks of detailed research, I finally chose a Studer A80 RC Mk II tape machine (though I can hear BrianC moan!).

No moans here mate :o) It's my buddy at the studio (who hears things I don't) who calls it "The Fog Machine". The master dubs I receive off it sound fine to my frazzled old ears. Only a C37 is going to satisfy his itch LOL

'Brilliant Corners' (along with 'Creek Bank') is set to be my New Year indulgence.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Transports and tape handling

A Stephens! I know someone who was involved in building a couple of those way back. Light portables for mobile use.
An interesting and unique optical method was used to ensure speed stability I understand.

Tape Tech / Reel screws and barrel nuts

I have a friend who has 200 flanges and 100 hubs but no screws and nuts to assemble them. Anyone know an off-the-shelf source?
Thanks.

FWIW 3M M79s were Bruce Swedein's machines of choice for 'Thriller'.
We have an 8-track M79 one-incher in the studio and it is still a superb performer.
Sonically outshines the 2-track Studer A80RC.

BTW, noise apart, the SP7 sounds damn good. Better than the monitor feed of my PR99 Mk1 with its stock electronics.
A big, solid sound.

Owning and using a Stellavox portable is an "involving" experience, rather like owning a classic car or motorcycle - but with cleaner hands!
My SP7 is one of the very first (SN 690.003) and is mechanically much noisier than the Revox PR99 (which is a sweetheart to use but which is now relegated to spooling & splicing duties in another room).

It turns out that much of the noise was due to the original steel spring belt and swapping this with the neoprene belt for the feed reel of the ABR large reel unit has brought improvement. I think further improvement can be obtained by getting this belt off the machine completely. Has anyone found a source for suitable neoprene replacements? Vital statistics 17" x 2mm diameter.

To answer your question Ki I guess the Stellamaster version of any of the three portable models (7, 8 or 9) would be optimum, although I could only justify the extra expense if the machine was also to be used for recording. I don't think a 1/4" version of the TD9 exists although I could be wrong since Georges Quellet designed for maximum versatility.

Suggestion Box / Re: Suggestion for Series 3

Did someone say Art Pepper? Certainly something from the Contemporary catalogue engineered by the great Roy DuNann - and there's plenty of Pepper there to season our Season :o)

Brian.

PS My son has just suggested a Blue Note - Cannonball Adderley's "Somethin' Else".

Pressure from two directions - PayPal and ex-boss Georges Quellet - has brought a quick result, another apology...and a Swiss Post tracking number! The SP7 should be therefore arriving around the same time as my first Project tapes. Happy Christmas me!

The black control fascia was a feature of the final, Mark III, model.

Suggestion Box / Another Monk?
« on: December 11, 2009, 08:05:39 AM »
I wonder if Paul has auditioned "Thelonious In Action At The Five Spot"? Every vinyl release sounds a bit lacking in attack & presence. If this is NOT a shortcoming of the Riverside master I humbly propose it as a candidate if ever a second Monk tape is to be considered for release.

Hi Ki, no it's an ex-Australian Army IV-L. I was in communication with David Lane at Richmond Film Services when I got news of his death. Unfortunately there is now no-one there with the knowledge and experience to fettle analogue Nagras.

Re Monsieur Gurtner of Stellavox, I have found him somewhat evasive since he told me I would be getting my SP7 "next week" over a month ago. Kostas Metaxas told me he had to wait 6 months for the return of a modified SU8.
My last communication from Gurtner was an apology and statement that he would be shipping my Stellavox "tomorrow".
That was a month ago.
Still waitin' & whistlin'

It's not the waiting that has peeved me, it's the gratuitous lying.
