Willy and the Poor Boys / Re: Listening Impressions
« on: April 30, 2013, 11:52:05 AM »
Just played it for the first time in my little "studio" space on MTR-15 and was stunned!  Finally, the kind of material on tape I've been dreaming of!!!!! I'm hoping we can get more material like it...anyone for some Blue Cheer of Sir Douglas Quintet (or  Jimi Hendrix's "Electric LadyLand"???  The later would make me feel like I'd died and gone to heaven....)?

Can't wait to play it back later thru my Cornwalls' and RF-7's - :)

I've been going thru and dubbing albums from my pre-recorded reel collection and coming across all sorts of "albums" that be great as tape project tapes.  However, I noticed one audity that stands out for me - The Sir Douglas Quintet's "Mendocino".  Its' been one of those albums I always heard about as a teenager, but could never find copy.  I finally won a reel-to-reel copy of it on E-bay and like wow!  A funky mix of SF Psychedelia, Texas Blues stuff that sounds pretty original and like the stuff that genre roots are made of.  I don't know if anyone else remembers Sir Doug or the album and would like to nominate it.

I also found a copy of the Monkees last album (I think?) "Head" and found it very interesting and listenable.  Was totally blown away and shocked to learn Carole King co-penned "the Porpoise Song".  Who'd thought?  It'd make a great artifact from 60's...did you know that Niel Young played on the album?  Lots' of big names played on it....it'd be great to have a decent copy of it from the Tape Project too...

Best, HOpkins

Hey gang --- If your interested, see below
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

We have several A80/QC cassette-tape, open-reel machines.

Most came purchased direct from mastering QC room at Sony in Carrolton, GA  ....and EMI duplication room in Jacksonville, IL., as those facilities were in process of down-sizing.

Most of the machines have been sitting unused in a climate-controlled warehouse since they were removed from those facilities.

We are clearing space for a new business venture right now, and need the space that these machines occupy.

If you one or more machines for parts, this is a great opportunity.

We are open to entertain any offers for all or part of this equipment.

Thank you,

I did a bit of comparison listening and I have to say that the B67 sounds a bit tighter/brighter then the 810...but not by much.  The 810 feels like it handles tape gentler and more controlled compared the the B67.  Anyone else have experience comparing the two?

I'll have to get back to you on that one...the B67 is hooked into a Klipsch home speaker system while the 810 is hooked up to a valve amp Klipsch CWIII's...I think the 810 sounds a bit more sophisticated and warmer, while the B67 have a really tight crisp image.

What will be interesting once I get my Seduction kit put together is comparing the 810 to a "Bottlized" Technics 1500.  They'll be in the same system and easier to access....Hopkins

Service Resources / Studer Tech in San Francisco...

Hi all...I can't remember if I posted info on Michael Gore's repair shop here in San Francisco and wanted to make sure I let folks know about him.  He runs the Bay Area Studio Engineering (BASE) http://www.Analogrules.com and repairs Studer, Ampex, Revox and Otari's...sometimes TEAC and Tascam too.  I think most of his work is for studios, but is also happy to do work for us "audiophiles" too.

To date, he's worked on my 810 and B67, using the Tape Project Alignment tape and 468 tape for bias.  I just got my B67 back and like wow!  I?m listening to a crappy dub of Melanie?s ?Leftover wine? album and the high-end sparkles like it never has and her voice doesn?t get shattered in cross-talk.  There was new crispness in the drums and i can even hear bits of movement in the studio that I hadn?t heard before?way kewl!  He's working on my two PR99's currently and I'll let folks know how they turn out.

He's also pretty good about keeping Gear Acquistion Syndrome (GAS) in check and consistently tells me that I've got a great machine in the 810 as I drool over the C37's that pass thru his shop - tee - hee!

Best....Hopkins

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Plain Revox/Studer NAB Adaptors
« on: June 16, 2008, 04:19:31 PM »
Hi all...I took Doc's recommendation of J-Corder for those studer style aluminium caps and asked if they just had the black "hockey puck" Revox/Studer NAB adaptors.  Jeff told me that they do, even though the adaptors aren't listed in their catalogue (http://www.j-corder.com/).

Anyhow, if your looking for the plastic Studer NAB Adaptators and are tired of bidding on them, contact Jeff at J-Corder.  They're going for $95/pair or $85/pair for 5 pairs or more...I ordered 2-pair and they arrived within a few days.  Darkfield is on the bottom and their brand-new black plastic...also a bit tighter then my old ones.

I luv the Studer list for its' information and I've learned enough to become a Studer fool -- :)  The downside of the list is that its' hard to obtain various subject threads, since it doesn't have a GUI to navigate it.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / 810's organicity??
« on: February 02, 2008, 07:44:01 PM »
Angel brought my 810 back after changing the power capacitors for me.  It played sort of funky in terms of speed and Angel told me it was from being in his cold car.  He should me how to play with the tension trimmers and said it should be fine after a few hours of play.  He said that he'd put the power sitting at 140 to keep it from running so hot, but the Studer list was unanimous about turning it back to 120, which I did, and gave a few tips on playing with the trimmers.  So I got out the manual, found the instructions for sitting tape tension, and did my measurements with the deck on its? back?Lo and behold, after a few minutes of play time in the upright position, my 810 is running perfectly!

For what its? worth, I also heard on the Studer list that as long as you use your 810 fairly frequently, it runs perfectly.  Problem is when you put an 810 in storage for long periods.  I think that means you have let it sort of ?warm? up for a few days to let it find itself again?sounds kinda organic to me?hmmm

I thought I read the same thing too, but can't remember where...if I'm remembering what I read correctly, it looked 7 1/2 ips was the best balance between high and low-end.  Personally, I too and quite happy with 15 ips at this point and think I'm with Steve on wanting to go to 1/2-inch first and make sure that my 1/2-inch machine had a 30ips setting...only IMO

Steve - I ordered the Last head and tape treatments and they arrived very quickly.  I treated an old pre-recorded tape that tended to sound muddy and you're right about it sort of lifting a veil...the piano is clearer, as are some echo effects and the bass.  Also, the "stereo" image seems tighter...I'm converted!

N.B.  I just noticed that the tape treatment has also taken care of the uneven channel levels on some pre-recorded tapes.  I just treated and played one and the channel levels are pretty even...

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Studer B-67 Reel to Reel
« on: January 14, 2008, 11:05:10 AM »
Bob...I think I made that comment before I caught up with where you are with your B-67 purchase.  I'm feeling blinded by the MTR-15 and would most assuredly consider the 810 as well!

On the otherhand, in terms of general reliability, I'd probably consider keeping a B-67 or PR99 in the closet for back-up.  That's because I think what I've learned from Angel Gentchev and Jack Clark is that those two models are probably the most "dependable" ones because they're fairly simple designs and don't have as many parts to keep tuned, so to speak.  That said, I don't think that these guys have the most gentle transports compared to machines like the 810 or the MTR-15.

Out of curiosity about the MTR-15...I thought I asked about a "self-tuning" machine awhile back and thought there wasn't such a creature.  Is this machine really capable of self-tuning its' bias and other recording adjustments?  It looks like you can buy the machine brand new as a special build:  http://www.otarius.com/products/MTR15.html  I don't remember seeing this before.  Guess I've really been asleep at the wheel for the past few months....thanks for waking me up!!!
