Raw Tape / Capture Tape
« on: May 24, 2016, 12:38:15 PM »
There's going to be a new tape available in June 2016.
From what I can tell, it is being produced by Pyral in France (parent company to Mulaan Industries who are currently manufacturing RMGI which is now called "Recording the Masters").
So, here's the linky to everything I know:

note the "spec's" link

It would seem to be as Skylab stated. A recording of a student performance.
These were probably broadcast on a local radio station. It wasn't uncommon to have a weekly program devoted to a local music dept.. These kinds of broadcasts were almost never "live" and during that time frame, reel to reel would have been the way it was recorded.
As you might guess, these performances are hit or miss and the recordings depend entirely on the gear and knowledge of the operators.

All you can do is give it a listen. Sometimes with these kinds of school or radio tapes, what is on the label is totally different from what's on the tape.
You might get lucky though. It could be fantastic sounding!

Great stuff Myles!
Thanks for the link.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Lyrec part
« on: April 06, 2016, 12:23:05 PM »
Hi Ki!
Been a while.
I subscribe to the Lyrc group and saw a conversation between Keith (Wereldomroep) and Harold who runs the group.
Last time I saw an email, it looked like Harold provided Keith with the part he needed (reel table hold down).

So, even though some of these groups don't have a ton of activity (you should see the 3M Tape Machines group if you think that the Lyrc is deadsville) give them a try. It can't hurt!

There is a Lyrec group over on Yahoo.
You should join them and ask over there.
I believe that the group's founder has access to lots of spares.

Raw Tape / Re: Beta Testing The New 1mil ATR MDS-36
« on: February 06, 2016, 02:08:27 PM »
That's awesome Lance!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I'd love to hear if you have any issues with print through since that is one of the problems encountered with tapes that are thinner and highly modulated.
I'm sure that ATR has done their own testing though.
Can't wait to see it hit the market!

Good stuff.
I always have a stack of Tape Op's in the "reading room".
There's gold in every issue!

Awesome article Myles!
Your writing always keeps me glued to the page (screen).

There's a stab in the heart of the naysayers. And another pat on the backs of the TP guys.
Congrats guys.

Tape Project Machines / Re: bypassing preamp on otari mx 5050
« on: December 14, 2015, 01:30:25 PM »
Hey tom,

Welcome to the forum.
There are a number of manuals and schematic packs for the Otari.
You should be able to download them all (including some you don't need) from a link located in our "Links" sticky.
That sticky is located above the General forum.
The post that contains the links in #19.
Be sure and save those manuals. They were missing in action and a member here was kind enough to bring them together and make them available.

Hey Larry, great to see your post.
It might seem kind of weird that someone would like to add the distortions and non-linear artifacts of tape to a nice pristine recording but there is a huge demand for just that.
I think a lot of the interest comes from folks who produce music completely "in the box" meaning 100% digital.
I have to admit that I'm pretty deep into the rabbit hole of music technology (3rd year studying it) and write and produce with virtual instruments with a virtual score into a virtual recording platform.
These emulations are meant to help make sterile sounding recordings sound more human and while I use them sometimes, I know that there is no magic bullet.
There are some that not only allow you to choose the tape speed, but some let you switch between tape width, tape formula and even the machines.
These tape emulations have been around for a while and I believe that the 1/2" ATR that Romo has was modeled and can be bought.

General Discussion / Re: Bulk Tape Erasers / Erasure
« on: October 16, 2015, 11:22:08 AM »
This comes up every now and then on the Ampex list.
The rotation of the reel is to prevent this pulsing. It needs to be steady and constant. It's supposed to be better if you move the reel off of the eraser in a smooth movement while the machine is still on (just like on heads).
If it's a good (powerful) eraser, be care of watches, bank cards etc.
Sometimes it's just that the machine isn't working correctly but, just off the top of my head, I seem to recall that repeated applications decreased the pulsing.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Revox B77 mkII advice needed
« on: September 29, 2015, 12:20:37 PM »
IIRC, the B77 is a 1/4 track machine unless special ordered with 1/2 track heads.
If that's the case, you will also need a different playback(repro) head.

If you're not familiar with the different track configurations on the heads, there is info included in the "Beginners Guide" located in a sticky above the General Forum (toward the end of that thread).
