Raw Tape / Re: Recommendations for tape

Thanks...are all of these tapes "456" compatiable in terms of bias?
I think that one of the formulations is but it's best to check their site. There's a section call " what tape should I use?" that's really good for just what it says.

Tape Project Machines / Hey Doc,
« on: January 19, 2007, 01:36:49 AM »
It seem like just yesterday when I was bugging you about tweaks for my ampex f44. I still pull it out every once in a while but the rs1500/seduction rules the roost for now. I took my f44 and a super dynamic BC tape to a local audio dealers to hear an amp once. My f44 is the type that comes in the suitcase. It's so clunky and early '60's looking I could feel the eyebrows raising and hear mumbling as I threaded the tape. I turned it off after the first movement but the store owner made me play the rest. This time on his reference system.
BTW did you see the post I left with the specs on the different heads over on the bottlehead forum. I think you were still at CES or just gotten back.
Also, regarding the repo amp, as far as i'm concerned, I wouldn't mind if there was a way for you guys to produce it without the balanced studio level outputs because, like i said, I have no need for it and I could save some money. But, I would prefer to have it built with the premium components.

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: Barclay-Crocker tape catalog?
« on: January 19, 2007, 01:04:44 AM »
I have a catalog and a catalog for Direct to Tape recordings (from New Jersey as I recall) - someone want to copy it?
You bet! If you can't post it, I'd be happy to cover any shipping and get it back to you safe and sound. BTW, I checked out your 1/2 track listing on the Yahoo forum. Holy Cow! You don't have all those do you? I think I saw that the first was in 1954. And they were produced till around 1960 right? I never would have believed that there were so many RCA's in 1/2 track. I've tried looking up listings like that at the Library of Congress but it's difficult unless you can go there. What kind of resources did you use?

I hope you guys know about US Recording Media. I think the days of getting ripped on Ebay for our supplies are over. They have the new RMGI tape on 1/4" 10.5" reels, metal or plastic. There are many grades of this tape as well as thickness. The empty metal reels are pretty reasonable. Here's the site;usrecordingmedia.com

Tape Tech / Hey Paul, any plans on another bias clinic
« on: January 18, 2007, 07:35:33 PM »
I noticed a page on ATR's site that they held a workshop on adjusting r2r's at your studio (last year?). Are there any plans on having another one. ? It could well be over my head (he-he), but , if you could let us know if you do have another one there, I'd be interested if I can afford it of course. Could you tell us a bit about what they did?

Suggestion Box / Re: Test tones on ALL tape releases??
« on: January 18, 2007, 07:27:20 PM »
I think I have to side with Paul on this one. For one thing, I like having my own test tape so when I get my machine serviced I can have them use it and I know that it hasn't been abused. Also, I hate being knocked in the head by the test tones on my Barclay-Crockers. And I'm sitting within arms reach the deck but sometimes I forget. But,.. I can see an advantage on having the test tones "on" the actual tape for really fine tuning. As far as the technical issues, I'll just read what you guys think.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Maintenance Questions?
« on: January 16, 2007, 11:38:15 AM »
Hi Terry, I use turbine oil on bearings. There some stuff called "Zoom Spout" that you can get at some (not all, try old one and call first) Ace hardware stores. It's made by Norvey Inc. and the bar code #is 5076023654. Its was recommended over at recordist.com. For mechanical levers, linkage I use the white grease that they sell at Radio Shack. As far as the sensing tape for auto reverse, check out US recording Media.usrecordingmedia.com

Prerecorded Tapes / Barclay-Crocker tape catalog?
« on: January 16, 2007, 11:24:32 AM »
Does anyone out there know where I can download a copy of a relatively complete listing of the tapes they released. I've got about 80 now and I'm still seeing more that I don't have than have. Also a listing of the Mercury releases would be cool.
Thanks in advance
Steve Koto
