Hi Charles,
                yes I did try that and its much better, i had one trace superimposed over the other and the apparent movement/misalignment is much less. On a professional machine like an ATR for example is it generally the same or more stable.

Thanks Doc, but I don't think its tape stretch as it happened with a new alignment tape. Steve I do zoom in to make the ellipse the same size at all frequencies, so I suppose I am magnifying any movement by doing this but i just expected it to be more stable. My Technics 1506 is the same and thats a new machine (new old stock) I tried recording a 10KHz tone on some new tape and playing it back, its the same unstable pattern.

Just doing an alignment on my Revox C270 and I am having trouble getting a stable pattern on the oscilloscope at 10Khz and 15Khz. I get a stable reading at 1Khz this I understand is par for the course but just what causes the lissajous pattern to open and close  at 10 and 15Khz is it mechanical, electrical or both !

I'm interested in making modifications to the playback performance of my C270 and wondered if anybody else here has attempted to do the same either solid state or with Valves/Tubes.

I'm sure that's just one of many colours/styles available, check their website. Its obvious they have put a lot of work into this machine to make it effectively their own design and a very good one at that.

Thanks Steve, yes I did change the output tubes around. When I bought the amp it still had the original Luxman branded Golden Dragon EL34 and 12AU7 tubes, the 12BH7A's had been changed for Philips. Not really knowing the history of the amp I decided to invest in new tubes and bought some Shuguang Treasure EL34, NOS Mullard 12AU7WA and RCA 12BH7A.Thanks Myles also, I checked the fuse's but there isn't one for each tube, what fuse's there are were ok. It was a resistor Steve thanks, not on the cathode but the screen grid.
        Hopefully that's all it is, pin four on all four tubes are linked together via 100 ohm resistors, one for each tube. Out of the four the resistor for the tube with no bias was open circuit, two others were ok and one was out of spec at 120 ohm. I've ordered better quality   1% Tantalum  resistors from Partsconnexion.com to replace all four. It will probably be a couple of weeks before I get them, thanks again for all the help and suggestions.

Hi everyone, I bought recently  a Luxman integrated amp ( SQ-38 Signature ) whilst checking it I noticed one output tube running a lot cooler than the rest. I checked the bias setting on that particular tube, there isn't any !! absolutely nothing. The other three bias fine
 ( 40mv )  there is continuity from pin three to the circuit board, swapping tubes around makes no difference, any ideas? tube compliment is four EL34, two BH7A and four 12AU7. Unfortunately I don't have a schematic but found this on the web.

SACD effective range is 100KHz.  It beats tape in all technical parameters -- effective frequency is 100KHz, sampling is 1 bit at 3 GHz.  Notice G for Giga -- this is not PCM for discrete A/D, this is what Sony and Philips call "digital analog" for capturing the waveform.  Folks can see more on SACD at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Audio_CD, or the SACD forum, http://sa-cd.net/.

I personally would appreciate Paul's opinions from his own SACD mastering experiences on whether a DSD recording directly from the master tape realized as SACD can beat the tape copied through 2 generations.

Alexy, you are talking about making a copy of an analogue master tape so sacd having a effective range of 100kHz is a moot point. The master tape that the TP and sacd copy's are derived from is one and the same, it didn't capture anything above 25KHz at best and probably less. The high sampling rate cannot be compared to tape as nothing is sampled during the tape copy process its simply tape to tape, no conversion to digital. Everytime you make a copy, something is lost no matter how you do it. When you digitize something you don't just copy it you convert it ( to digital ) store it, and then you make a stamper ( another conversion ) in order to produce the disc. After purchasing said disc you take it home read it with a laser ( another conversion ) send the resultant signal through a Dac ( another conversion ) in order to hear it. No conversion is perfect no matter the what the sampling rate is. thats an awful lot of conversions!!! Tape to tape is the way to go it doesn't take a scientist ( or physicist ) to work that out.
