Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Revox PR99 Upgrades
« on: September 10, 2014, 06:47:03 AM »
While out on EBay, I saw a person from Australia advertising various upgrades for PR99, for example
1. Capacitor and preset pot upgrade kit
2. Tape Guide bearings + Pinch Roller
3. Motor upgrade kit for all 3 motors, seems to be new bearings and lube

I'm the original owner of a PR99, non professional over the years. I'm wondering if anyone has done this type of upgrade? I'm most curious about a cap upgrade, I've done that in the past with other vintage pieces of equipment plus some newer ones too.

Anyone have experience or comments on something like this?

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Tascam BR20 Maintenence
« on: May 29, 2014, 02:29:44 PM »
I've purchased a Tascam BR20 from someone local to my area, Atlanta. I don't know the age of the machine, but assuming its fairly old, cosmetically it does show its age abit, but seems to record/play back just fine. I did go in & replace the belt & capstan.

But I'm also wondering if any of the electronics need updating? I was thinking in terms of caps etc. Like power supply/motor caps etc. Ones in the signal path? Or even circuit upgrades?

On a cosmetic level, I was thinking of have the metal cabinet powder coated too. Does any one know if the plastic caps, like pinch roller etc can be painted? I checked with Tascam parts, most if not all the cosmetic stuff is unavailable now.

Well according to E-Bay, it sold with a BuyIt now price of $4,449.99 plus $200 for shipping. You could get a brand new Otari 5050 for $5762.00.

I had been watching it, the price went from $19K down to $4500, which looked like the magic nbr, since its status is sold today 5/4/2010.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Curious about R2R
« on: May 04, 2010, 09:09:10 AM »
Hello all. I'm curious about obtaining a R2R deck. I have what would be considered a high end hifi system, Theta, Esoteric, Aerial gear. With much curiousness, I'm interested in obtain a r2r most likely via AudioGon, Ebay, maybe Craigslist. In the 70's had a Crown, Tandberg 20AE, Revox A77, so somewhat familiar with the brands of the day.

I've been watching Ebay & Audiogon over the past couple of months & see all flavors of R2R on the block. In terms of finding a machine, that ultimately would be upgradeable to tape project standards, electronics etc. Is there any specific machine I should be looking out for if given a preference? Since all are old, no longer produced, parts/service/cosmetics are a concern. I'm in no reel hurry to jump in but just waiting for the right machine that appears to be a good choice. Which is the problem, which decks to keep an eye out for and what ones to avoid.

As a guest I've been reading the various posts here to get an idea of decks & issues involved. But never really seen a listing of the preferable decks assuming the all meet the basic qualifications for a TapeProject deck.

So I'm hoping some experienced members might give me a ranking of what machines would be a good candidate to try and acquire??? For example I see Revox's on Ebay, but also see a ton of spares for them which is appealing.
