TOTALLY Agree with Myles - "experienced" the tape at his place yesterday.  Dave Grisman's Mandolin is the best I've ever heard

Congratulations (and Merry Christmas) Guys - and dolls.

Charles

Glad you enjoyed the tape as much as I did Charlie!

Events / Re: Jacqui Naylor and Art Khu live recording at Bottleheadquarters
« on: November 22, 2015, 07:51:06 PM »
We have some very exciting news! Jacqui Naylor and Art Khu will be back in December for another concert at Bottleheadquarters on beautiful Bainbridge Island. The dates are December 4th and 5th with a 7:30 start time. Please arrive a bit early for some nosh and beverages, as we will need to seat everyone before the recording session begins. Each of the very intimate shows Jacqui and Art have put on in past years at BHQ has sold out. In 2015 we made a last minute decision to experiment with a live recording to tape of the performance with very promising results. This year we will be doing a live mix "on the fly" via a vintage Altec all tube console to our world famous Bottlehead modified Nagra T Audio tape recorder. So if you want to experience a live jazz recording session with the flavor of those fabulous mixed on the fly jazz club recordings of the 50s and 60s, and meet two amazing artists in a very up close and personal (just two dozen seats) venue, don't miss this show!

Tickets for Friday, December 4th show

Tickets for Saturday, December 5th show

Wow wish I was out on the West Coast! Be a nice way to celebrate my birthday on December 4th! :)

Return of Reeltronix Reels

Know some of you at one time expressed interest in these reels. It looks like Greg might get Patrick to do at least one more run. This may be your last opportunity to get one or two or more of these reels.

General Discussion / Re: Capitol Audio Fest Rockville MD/D.C Suburb
« on: August 24, 2015, 06:30:54 AM »
It seems as though you guys on the west coast and the big cities get all the fun.

However in two weekends the upstarts in the Mid Atlantic Region right up the road from D.C. in Rockville MD will have our own Hi Fi event with a concert sure to please.

Lyn Stanley will perform Saturday 7:00 PM at the show free of charge.  With two well received albums under her belt she seems to have the goods in terms of voice, stage presence and production values for her recordings.  No riding the gain control for this lady.  She even likes and records mainly in analog on tape!

You have Jacqui we have Lyn.

Still modest by the likes of Axpona, and other more established shows, Capitol Audio Fest has fewer big badge companies however the interest, enthusiasm and congeniality of the attendees make the experience quite enjoyable.

If you are in the area, consider stopping by.

I have no finacial interest in the show, VPI or the Ms. Stanley's concert.

One more thing VPI is going to introduce their new table the Avenger at the show.  A skeletal HRX based minimalist plinth able to accomodate three arms of any manufacturer and length.

Very cool looking.  Nothing like you have ever seen from VPI.

Don't forget Greg Beron's UHA reel-to-reel display and his after hours listening sessions. Guaranteed to have some great music!

Thanks, that might come quite quickly too :)

Oughta sound pretty lifelike on your rig! 😎

OK so at least three people on the planet were to have received this title in a few days after posting their squeels of delight and other than Ironbut no one else has gotten around to playing the darn tape and telling the rest of us how it sounds?

I am not bitter; no not me!

No offence Ironbut.  Your taste is impeccable.

Mine just arrived and it's in the listening queue! 😄 Have  a couple of other reviews to finish first.

General Discussion / Re: Info Regarding RMGI/Pyral
« on: June 13, 2015, 06:17:18 PM »
In case any of you guys were wondering what was up with RMGI lately, here's a email that Jay McKnight posted to the Ampex list this week.
It comes from the US distributor of RMGI/Pyral.

Hello Analog Magnetic Tape Recordists,

As you may or may not have heard, there are some changes at the analog
tape maker RMG. Since there are only two analog tape makers, and our
businesses depend on their continued existence, I had asked "Can you
give us some accurate information to distribute", and here it is:

"March 11, 2015

"Dear RMGI Customer,

"I want to bring you up to date on the new situation regarding our
production in France of analog recording
tape.

"As you know, in 2011 the RMGI factory in the Netherlands was purchased by
Pyral and move to their
new facility in France. Pyral had invested over $2,000,000 in a new building
to house the coating and
production lines. There was also over a one year supply of tape moved to
Pyral to meet the market
demands while the coating and production were being re-assembled in France.

"After numerous cost overruns that had not been anticipated such as the
installation of a new solvent
recovery system with a cost of over $250,000, Pyral has operated under
Chapter 11 protection in 2013-
2014.

"In January of this year the court ordered that Pyral assets to be sold to
Mulann Industries. Mulann
Industries is a manufacturer of production and testing equipment for the
credit card, ticketing and smart
card industries.

"On March 4th I meet with the new owner of Pyral and his Sales
Director in Chicago. He has assured me the continued production of
Analog Recording tape. Mulann Industries, with a new management team
is committed to improved delivery time and size carefully the
inventory at the factory. Effective immediately, Mulann Industries
will deliver only tape with the Pyral Brand.

"RMGI Americas will continue to be the distributor for the Pyral Analog
Recording Studio Recording
Tape.

"Thank you for your continued support of RMGI\Pyral Studio Tape. If you have
any questions, don't
hesitate to contact me.

"Regards,
"Don Morris

Doesn't seem to instill a lot of faith in me. Far from a ringing endorsement and it seems people are still waiting on orders.

I wish the NY show later this year could have this seminar. While in wish mode, I would love to attend the Axpona Chicago show.

Working on it but think have more of a shot for RMAF.

Thanks for the list!
However, I couldn't find any signs of reel to reel here:
Premonition Records
Lyn Stanley
Fone Records
Dangerous Analog
Groove Note
Analog Mastering Services

http://www.analogmaster.net/master-tapes-for-sale/

Groove Note, Fone and Opus 3 are handled by Elusive Disc. Type reel on their search engine.

Lyn Stanley's latest release  (all analog) engineered by Grammy Award winning engineer Al Schmidt is available directly from from Lyn.

I'm not sure whether or not the Patricia Barber is still available. Jonathan Horwich was duping the tapes for that release.

Dangerous Analog is brand new and we will be introducing the CEO and company at Axpona. They will also have a booth at the marketplace. Their first release will be out this month and their catalog will consist of both new recordings and reissues.

Besides obviously TTP's releases, highly recommend Yarlung, Lutz Precision, Opus 3 and Groove Note!

We've come a long way in just the last three years! When Dan was a member of our first panel at Axpona, there was but a handful of companies releasing 15 ips tapes. That number has tripled since then due to the demand from more and more people buying decks and especially the work of Greg Beron who has carried out a scorched earth policy of trying to get every company on earth to release in the tape format. Not to mention the people buying Greg's UHA decks.
