General Discussion / Capital AudioFest

As our friend Greg from United Audio has posted once before, the first and hopefully not the last Capital Audiofest is coming up in just a few weeks in June down in Rockville Md.  Check out the web site for particulars.
Those of you in the Mid Atlantic/Virginia region know that it has been quite some time since the demise of the Washington DC audio shows.
Now is a great time to vote with your feet and show up to support this event.
I feel certain that Greg will be playing TP tapes on his RTR rig(s).
That alone is worth the ride for me.
I have no financial interest in the event or any of the exhibitors, merely the self interest of a music listener and hi fi enthusiast.  I do not consider myself a 'hobbyist' which seems to be the latest adjective to be tagged with by our own audio press.

I ran across a Japanese CD site where there must have been at least 20 reissues of Ms. London's albums on remastered release this June!
FYI did you know that there are now 5 CD formats in Japan duking it out?
I know we spit on CDs, but really isn't it interesting that market forces provide access to predominately western world musical artists in higher fidelity versions that are able to be purchased in the country of artist origin?

In the latest TAS Johnathan Valin gives a back handed compliment to the TP and United Audio (here in the Free State of Maryland) while acknowledging that the TP as source and United Audio's reworked Tascam RTR are as close as the public is likely to get to the real deal he opines that the pursuit is for the well healed adventurer, not a main stream pursuit (my characterization not his).
With a review to follow, it is better than nothing, but in reality we are a bit out there aren't we?

Suggestion Box / Something Unconventional

Now I believe I understand the reason for secrecy in these licensing matters.
However would it be too weird to have a secret ballot of specific titles or music genres to provide thought/guidance to the owners of the TP for what not only is liked, but would sell?

Caution contradicition ahead.

Now as it is quite clear from my recent postings, I am not shy about indicating my preferences which are decidedly not in the 'war horse' or remastered in various formats to within the reasonable resiliency of the master tape's life category.
Let's have something new, different, off the beaten track.

As I have indicated previously I have no interest in comparing one format original or reissue to the TP version ad nauseum; but neither do I begrudge others to partake in that pastime.
If I was a younger man perhaps I would allocate the time, however as a nearly 60 year old, I hear the sounds of the meat wagon as often as the Dolby tones on my Barclay Crocker tapes; think Pictures at an Exhibition Ox Cart.

One of my adult pleasures was and still is discovering new music to savor and enjoy.
The newness of the music is not determined by the age of the performance but the time of discovery.
Get out of the comfort zone and enjoy.

Perhaps more likely than Bread and Roses Musical Festival to make it into the running for consideration is this wondeful under the radar release by Dennis Wilson.  The deluxe treatment on CD and vinyl might mean that the tapes should still be pretty easy to find and are likely in good shape.
Not interested in that?
If not that then how about Surf's Up by the Beach Boys which is a hum dinger of a release which sort of gets lost in all the accolades of Pet Sounds.

Well U.C. Berkeley trivia fans and residents anyone remember this charity?
Steve you wanted more Fantasy, but I bet you did not consider this title.
This was a music festival held in the 80's is my guess by the youthful appearances of the performers; and what a nice lineup, Hoyt Axton, Joan Baez, Joel Bernstein, Norton Buffalo, Chamber Brothers, Chick Corea, David Crosby, Mimi Farina, Freebo, John Hammond, Kris Kristofferson, Leah Kunkel, Maria Muldaur, Graham Nash, The Roches, Pete Seeger, and Paul Siebel.  All captured on a two disc set from Fantasy F-79011.

Consider this another suggestion from the Patron Saint of Lost Causes for excellent titles that will never be TP releases, but it is nice to dream about it.

Suggestion Box / Junior Brown but which one?

I suspect that most if not all of Junior Brown's work has been recorded digitally which is an automatic disqualification.
However in seeing his show live in Annapolis Md tonight, you couldn't help but be amazed by his guitar virtuosity, breath of genres and stage presence.
Holy smokes indeed.  Junior places his guitar in a slightly(ever so) modified music stand at a height which makes him crouch a bit to play the "slide guitar", and in a more upright position to play the electric lead.  His fingers fly all the time all over the place.  Hand jive was never like this.
His guitar feeds into a suitcase sized amp to which is plastered two hall microphones which feed back to the sound/mixing board.  Minimalism on steroids?  Dressed in a dark pin stripe suit with white cowboy hat he looks like the mad hatter let loose in the Grand Ol Opry or Austin City Limits.
If you have never seen his guitar, look it up.  It is not your stock issue axe by any stretch.  To watch him play this thing is exhausting.
The sounds he gets are at once manic (but distinct and controlled) and then suddenly sublime and delicate. Dick Dale meets the pedal to the metal steel.
Go see this man if he is ever in your general vicinity.

I mention Junior, because I believe he is not under contract to any record label.  His last label Telarc is in a state of who knows what, and more telling, Junior is not selling product at the shows.
What an intriguing idea to do an original recording of Junior for the Tape Project.
If you had recorded tonight's show, I bet you could have sold plenty of copies, this guy is that good.  The show was that good.
Just him, an electric bass and a snare drummer, oh yes and his wife who is not too shabby a singer, and guitar player either.
I know this is probably pie in the sky, but if TP makes the master we wouldn't have to be concerned with; sorry that's another thread.

Suggestion Box / Jack Knife Gypsy/Great Speckled Bird

Paul Siebel's album of the same title on Elektra would be a nice treat for those who admire the "Woodstock" sound and a fella who has a unique voice not too dissimilar to Dylan's but more tuneful.
Musicianship is top notch and the songs are of substance.

For Ian and Sylvia fans this single album detour from their usual duo genre on Ampex Records is also mighty pleasing with exquisite ensemble work and strong song selections.

Fringe vest not required.
