General Discussion / Re: Early Stereo Tapes
« on: January 26, 2014, 07:22:24 PM »
The only stereo 15 ips two track from the 1950s that I've ever heard or seen is a Klipsch organ tape with John Eargle(who I studied with at Aspen). It is a great tape and quite rare. I've owned thousands of two track pre-records over the last 30 years and the Klipsch is the only one I've seen. My tape collecting friends have not seen any others.

General Discussion / RMAF tape talk

I just spoke with Charlie(stellavox) about the upcoming rmaf.
He is hosting an informal tape forum for an hour or two. Tape
Project folks are welcome to participate. No time is set up yet.
I'll post more info as it comes in.

I sold my super mint t-audio 10 years ago for $3200. It had
56 hours total run time. Came from a huge collection(mostly
Cameras) and the owner only owned one tape(Sinatra). I also
Purchased a Studer A80 1/2 inch two track that had 8 hours on the
Clock.

Better investments than most.

some pics of the innards. Note adjustable eq with 10 turn pots or fixed AME, NAB, Columbia eq.. The Columbia curve is rarely offered and is very obscure. IEC curve can be had through use of the adjustable controls. Out of the 2000 tapes my friend has, I don't know if he even has one IEC tape. Bob Craige restored the transport and the head is a Flux Magnetics.

Here is a Ti with custom Ampex 351 inspired electronics and custom play head that a friend of mine made a few years ago. He thinks quite highly of the Ti. I've heard it a few times and it is a sweet machine.

The landlord of my old studio building in East Hartford, Connecticut was in charge of running the Columbia tape facility in Stamford, Connecticut during the 1970s. He is full of information about the production line and how hard it was to keep the machines running. He came up with some novel methods during the time he was there. He is also a chemist and I think did some work on the tape formulation. His lab was right around the corner from my studio and we talked a couple of times about his time at CBS. Once he got started talking 'shop' it was hard to shut him up. One of my good audio buddies, Lord Accutech still has his shop there and is somewhat active in tape. I will try and get him to get some info down in writing or on tape. I think Charlie(stellavox) met him once about 15 years ago while visiting me there.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Nagra IV JS
« on: March 24, 2011, 05:21:08 PM »
Hi Gugliemo
I had a IVSJ about 15 years ago and remembered it to be the same as IV-S for playback- that is from a distant memory. One very rare and interesting machine I had about 3 years ago was this Sony 770 4 channel portable deck. It was set up for 7 1/2 and 15 ips and had balanced mike inputs. It was as much money as a Nagra at the time and Sony only sold about 20 of them. It came with mimeographed operating manual as they never came up with a colour manual. It is a fine sounding machine, although nowhere near as rugged as a Nagra or Stellavox. They are much more common in 2 track format.
I've used Stellavox(sp-7 and sp-8), Nagra IV-S and T-Audio, Lyrec PTR-1, Sony 770 for location recording and playback. The Lyrec and Stellavox are my favourites for sonics. The Nagra IV-S is a fine recorder and not so great for playback. Charlie and I did put Stellavox electronics into a Nagra IV- this turned out to be a sonic disaster- likely due to the heads not being entirely happy with the 'vox electronics. The Lyrec is both a great recorder and playback device, but two drawbacks are lack of mic preamps and mechanical noise levels. The reliability is not wonderful from my experience with 4 of these over the last 10 years.
Regarding the ABR- it is totally Rube Goldberg like in operation. Totally lame for playback, due to almost non-existent tape tension. The QGB(Nagra) is the reel deal- great engineering and build quality. The ABR is only useful for location recording IMO.

Great evening at Doc's with fine music and conversation. Congrats to the Bottlehead crew on your new headquarters. Here is a 30 second video I shot on my phone. Sorry about the grain- it was pretty dark :-)

Try Peter at Soundsmith. He has probably worked on more Tandberg gear than anyone else in the US. What a great guy and operation!

General Discussion / Re: Microphones- stereo ribbons
« on: June 14, 2010, 04:58:14 PM »
HI
I second Doc on the ribbon recommendation. Try a Royer Ribbon or B&O 200 with AEA preamp or old Advent mic preamp. SuperNatural sound. They take eq very nicely, as opposed to most condenser mics.

General Discussion / Re: Noise Reduction repair?

What has happened to the idea of a classified section on the Forum? I have an Advent 100A in NM condition with the walnut cabinet that I'd like to unload.
