General Discussion / Re: The Miles Davis Story
« on: June 17, 2013, 02:30:57 PM »
Hey Bob!

I can mess with a soldering iron and some point to point wiring, but just getting one of these monsters apart is a bit much of a project for me.  I know when to cry uncle.  Found a good shop not far from my hometown in Jersey (by forum recomendation), so I'm going to take it up there next month.  Cost has always been the barrier for me and R2R so I have decided to let a TapeProject friendly tech get the internal electronics up to snuff, give the mechanics the once over, replace the heads and give me a good set of RCA outs.  This is still cheaper than a good outboard tape amp (which would give me a great rig, but no cash left for tape! HA!).  So I should be up and running by the end of July.  There have been a few other changes to the plan as well but I'll give you a call later this week and catch you up.  Here is a hint.....  I'm going back to Jolida.  Tickles me that they used one of my quotes on the main page pertaining to the listening session we did at United Audio.  Been here since ineption and still have not played a tape in my own home!  ;-)  We're getting there though.

Bob Williams, you are still loved and thought about often in Baltimore Maryland.  Reading this thread brought back not so distant memories of our time together.  You were and are a great mentor and generous friend.  And for all those reading, please provoke him to more story telling.  You have a real music lover, musician, audiophile and piece of history in your midst.  I miss having him living around the corner. LOL!  Georgia's gain....

This is an area where we would need some guidance from the fans. I'm not familiar enough withe the live oeuvre to pick 'em. They might be available to us (then again they may not) but we can't even start talking until we are focused on something.

Because individual tastes are so different and there are litterally thousands of set lists to pick from I would suggest splitting the difference.  Narrow down fan selection to Band mastered and approved recordings. Dick's Picks is a series of live shows released by the band.  Direct from their soundboards to 2" tape and post "wheat chaff seperation" selection processes.  All sets are complete and uninterupted, so there is no "best of" feeling to them and you really get a good sense of being at a live show.  I had a couple of hundred cassetts during my years of following the band but, as a stereo junkie adult, Dick's consistantly provides a much better experience than anything passed around the community.

well.... you could use the first reel for Truckin' - assuming you 7.5 ips instead of 15 ips. :)

I know that The Dead used Mac amps in concerts as they really cared about the quality of the sound. I bet that the studio masters would have had similar care taken for the sound quality.

That's the problem.  Their best work was not done in the studio.  There are only 2 or 3 of their studio pieces I can listen to and I don't know if they would be worth a $300 tape.  Masters from some of the live shows though......A whole other story!  Thinking about a Summer of 85 Hersey Park second set that opens with Tom Thumbs Blues.  Face melting!

Tape Project Machines / Re: I'm back boys!

Hey Listens,

Thanks for the referral.  They are close to where I grew up and I needed a good excuse to go home for a weekend.  And his prices are right on point.  I'm headed up next month!

Also, lesson learned.  I did a search on some of my (very) old posts.  I have asked this question more than once and have always gotten good response.  Search old post fist before I bother folks next time.  LOL.

Now to find a used tape head amp to purchase......hhhmmmmm.

I agree, however dicks picks may be the only collection with a chance of intentional recording technique.

Tape Project Machines / I'm back boys!

It has been a long minute since I have posted anything here.  I took a break from the idea of tape for a long while and I have actually been away from my stereo all together for the last six months or so.  That being said, I have begun the process of purging equipment and rebuilding a nice simple system.  I have an Otari 5050 BII.  It turns and counts, but it needs a good once over by a good tech.  I am sure I want it for playback only and to bypass internal electronics and just have a R/L out to a tape amp.  I am not/can not do the deck work myself.

Does anyone know a good tech in the Baltimore/Washington area that can get my Otari ready for a TP album?  I am building speakers and and hunting down a couple of pieces of gear and have until about mid September before I need the deck done.  But I need somebody that understand s what we are doing here and can get me done for a reasonable price.  ($500>)

I would drive as far as North Jersey and Southern VA.

Thanks,
B

Great wintery afternoon had by all.  The tapes sound increadable and United Home Audio put together a system that did them justice.  Paul was really informative and kinda did liner notes for the sample tape he brought with him.  It all went very well.  Still want to know what's cookin' for series three.

Why do you need a Reel to Reel deck?
Just one listen and you will know.
Why are people going back to vinyl?
It sounds better than digital
Why go back to R2R?
It sounds better than Vinyl!
We have been seeing Reel To Reel tape decks at the High End Audio shows for a couple of years. The reason became apparent when we listened to a Master Tape on one of these decks. At CES last year we saw more and more manufacturers using R2R tape decks, but these decks were industrial decks or refurbished to work properly however they looked pretty bad for the most part. We wanted to offer the best of both worlds, looks and performance!

For any of you guys in the Baltimore/Washington Area, a local dealer (Columbia/Annapolis Junction, MD) is having a Reel to Reel workshop from 12pm to 4pm this Saturday where they claim to be demoing Tape Project Software.  The  real motivation behind this seems to be the sale of their project ready custom Tascam decks.  But I have done some business with them in the past and have had nothing but good experiences.  They have also shown a lot of excitement about working with Doc and the crew as partners.  Email me at [email protected] for details for now and once Doc gives me the all clear, I'll post it here.

Thanks guys,
I hope I did this right....

Suggestion Box / Trying again
« on: August 31, 2009, 09:18:24 AM »
I have been lurking forever, but it has taken me the last year to get my system back together.  Finishing my speaker overhaul this week and all that will be left will be the reconditioning of my Otari.  Then and only then can I justify the subscription expense in my house.

That being said, I see that you guys have worked out a deal with Staxx on the Staples Singers album.  Does that mean Issac Hayes "Hot Buttered Soul" is a possability?  I would buy that at any price regaurdless of system requirements.  Two runs and we are still way short on good soul music.  Anything from Gamble and Huff would be worth while as well.

Thanks for making this thing do what it does.

Oh yeah, you might want to give the guys at United Audio in Annapolis Junction MD a call.  send me a pm to discuss if you have time.

General Discussion / Re: Disscusions
« on: April 27, 2008, 10:57:11 AM »
Well, I think that part of the issue is that we just don't have quite as many members as some other audio boards where there is constant conversation.  less than 100 or so registered (correct me if I'm wrong Doc).  Fewer folks + specific topic (TP) = meaningful, but fewer threads.  We tend to be really focused here and many of the names here I recognized from other boards where we tend to do some of our broader geekin' out.  I have the same problem over at the Planar asylum.  If we didn't argue about the merits of one mod in particular, you could go for days without a new post.

With all that being said, if you start an interesting thread, you will get answers.  Because we are a small group, I think everyone kinda checks on all new messages.  Keep the faith.

Suggestion Box / Just because I can't sleep
« on: April 20, 2008, 10:40:23 PM »
I should be in bed right now, but was (go figure) listening to music and decided to risk being labled mass market.  Here are a couple of obvious choices and one or two sleepers.

Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms  It has been done so many different ways...tape may be the holy grail for Mark's guitar
Steely Dan: Goucho  Read the credits list on this album.  They paid everybody to chip in.
Joe Jackson: Night and Day  Some eighties moments ARE worth reliving
Tears for Fears: Songs from the Big Chair    see above
Marvin Gaye: Whats Going On  If you don't get it, I guess not...

Not so obvious

TelepopMusik:  Breath    As I am starting to listen to smooth trans/techno on XM  I am realizing there are some 45 minute mental vacations to be had.  This particular title I happen to own.  Done by two french DJs that I believe use tape.

Jill Scott:  826   Hidden Beach Records first live album.  Done at Constitution Hall in DC.  Amazing acoustics.  She is working with an outrageous band, possibly one of the finest live recordings I have ever heard.  She takes you with her from beginning to end.  Great stories, great musicianship, great crowd noise great performance.  Sounds like the raw material is flawless.  Could only be improved by getting it out of my CD player and onto my Otari.
