Welp. That didn't last very long. I guess we didn't make enough, and now we're out of stock again.

The elves have already started making more...will have it back in inventory soon.

The tape counter is driven from the reversing idler, that roller at the bottom of the tape loop, under the headstack. There are actually two belts, connected through an intermediate pulley. It's the bushing of that intermediate pulley that wears out and starts to squeal. We haven't had any luck lubricating that bushing. Our normal solution is to remove the belt that goes between the reversing idler and the intermediate pulley. Of course that renders the counter inoperative; we just don't find the counter useful anyway so we don't mind. It is possible to reach in there with a long tweezer and pull the belt off, then very slowly and carefully snake the belt around all the intervening machinery until you have extracted it. That leaves you proudly staring at a belt you will never need again as long as you live. Alternatively you can snip the belt and then pull it out by one end. Your choice.

Tape Project Machines / Re: Otari 5050 BII With Flux Magnetic Head
« on: May 20, 2017, 10:40:41 AM »
I have a lot of information on the MX5050BII but I can't find the inductance specs of the heads. Where did you find that?

RE: the two repro's, I don't have a basis for comparison. I am very familiar with the Bottlehead unit, which I have been using for years. I have only heard the deHavilland at shows, though I liked what I heard.

Willy and the Poor Boys / Re: Missing the Album Insert for Willy
« on: May 01, 2017, 02:44:32 PM »
Larry,

It comes with one. I have no idea whether you received a tape without one, or you got one and it went missing. I'll mail you a new one, and if the original one shows up, just remember that they are suitable for framing.

One more thing: the signature line.

It's there for you to put your name in--see the first post, it's the first rule in the first post above, please review that post.

You may of course put additional information in the sig line, but there are a couple of things you may NOT put there: active links, and information in any language other than English.

This only applies to the signature line. You may include relevant links within a post.

We delete accounts of users who put active links in the signature line--this is due to a ridiculous number of spammers using that technique. If you want to have either of these things in your sig, you may get approval by emailing info at tapeproject dot com.

Tape Tech / Re: Using Pancakes to store recorded tapes
« on: March 21, 2017, 10:44:23 PM »
I generally don't, but that's just because I don't like to handle pancakes--it's an unnecessary risk that I might spring the tape and wind up with a mess.

Having said that, I do handle them all the time, as we do our duping on pancakes. We have a regimen that minimizes the risk, and I recommend this to you if you should choose to store some of your tapes this way. We simply put the pancake between flanges whenever it's on the machine. This works great with the VIF style reel clamps we use on the ATR's, and it works fine with Tascam clamps too. Just put a spare flange on first, dimples up. Then put the pancake on. Then put another spare flange on, dimples down. Now secure the clamp and you're ready to go. You essentially have put together a reel for it, you just haven't screwed the reel together. Think of it as a temporary reel.
