Suggestion Box / How about BAD Co

Bad Company - Swan Song SS 8501 (LP) would be a great addition to the TP line. Paul Rodgers - Vocals, Mick Ralphs - Guitar, Boz Burrell - Bass and Simon Kirke - Drums. A total package that's great to listen to straight through.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Otari MX5050BII Bottlehead mod
« on: September 12, 2011, 07:59:07 PM »
In this thread http://www.tapeproject.com/smf/index.php?topic=553.0 does this mod keep the meters in play? Meaning are the meters accessing the signal from the board before terminal blocks 9, 13 or 14? I am not versed in reading schematics. If not does the mod offered eleiminate the meters? If so why not take the head connection off the head block connector?

Tape Tech / Otari MX5050BII main speed switch
« on: September 08, 2011, 07:22:28 PM »
I say main meaning the Hi - Low switch seen through the back of the control board. The one that makes the front panel speed switch either 3 3/4ips - 7 1/2 ips or 7 1/2ips - 15ips. The rub is that when you want to change the nature if this machine from pro to sumer you are instructed to remove the back cover and switch the deck from one to the other. Well on my HD I used a chassis punch to make a 1" hole in line with switch to eliminate removing the back. Great right? Well not really. What I really want to do is make a lever that moves the switch which would pivot at the hole in the board and protrude thou the back so I can just reach back when I want to listen to a 3 3/4ips tape. I could make a prototype using plasticlay, then fab out of aluminum. The pivot could be flattened on the ends and epoxied to the back of the board. Of coarse I understand that the switching would be reversed. Seems like a good addition to the mods being done to any 5050.

Your thoughts?

Tape Tech / Otari head swap
« on: August 01, 2011, 07:26:26 PM »
I have a set of Otari MTR 10-II-C 2 track heads I'd like to install on my MX5050BII-2. They will mount to the 5050 headblock. They will need alignment and calibration. They are part # GH4R132 and GH4P133. Theses are wide (fill the shields) chrome finish with thin horizontal lines discerning the tracks beauties. Is this an upgrade? Crossing fingers and hoping here.

Tape Tech / Seduction tape head mod
« on: July 23, 2011, 02:51:14 PM »
I have a Bottlehead Seduction phono preamp. I want to convert it to a tape head preamp with NAB and IEC EQ. I have read the thread and noted needed parts, final cap values and such. I am just wondering if there are any real instructions available.

The seller described this as factory built. It came with the "Suduction  A guide to constructing the..." manual and Packing List dated 12/16/10, a 3X (11"x 17") picture of the non-C4S assembled chassis, another 11' x 17" with 4 different angle pictures and description of adding 1" standoffs to the transformer, a pink sheet detailing revisions 4-29-04 and a Sales Receipt dated 12/9/2010 where the suduction with C4s upgrade kit add up to 444.00 USD. It is meticulously assembled with C4S board over the input RCAs, but no standoffs on the transformer. I would think the tranformer 1" satdoffs coub be retrofitted due the the wiring being long enough the "stretch" the distance. Though said stretching would take them away from the chassis/ground plane. Is this a good idea? And how about the tape head mod?

Tape Tech / Demag
« on: March 19, 2011, 08:04:50 PM »
Today I decided to clean the heads and tape path on my Teac X-3. Now this machine has always stood on top of a file cabinet where it is at eye level. I replaced(cleaned the goo away with alchohol) the main belt when it first got here. But never looked at the heads with tape running across them. Well I did today and boy was the alignment off. So I visually set the heads as I listen. It was off balance with center imaging off to the right. Using the Balance control on my preamp I found the left to sound muffled compared to the right , which no amount of fiddling with head adjustments could fix. Then it dawned on me..
DEMAGNETISE THE HEADS
Now amazingly well balanced sweet open sound eminates from the speakers. If this thing can sound so good I can't wait to finish modding my Otari!

Raw Tape / Recording Tape Thickness
« on: November 13, 2010, 09:38:34 AM »
I am considering 1mil 3600' tape for recording of 45rpm LPs as it will record 45 minutes @ 15ips. Is this going to be problematic on a well adjusted MX5050B2?

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Otari BII-2 Dig Counter
« on: October 18, 2010, 04:32:07 PM »
I have been freeing up and going through an Otari MX5050 BII-2. Last thing on my list is the digital counter. It lights up zeroed, but that's all. I know that PB-46 R is the board that controlls it and have cleaned all the contacts. Voltage is present on the board. Any ideas what specifically to test or where to source a replacement board assembly?

Thanks

Neal
