General Discussion / PROVENANCE
« on: July 21, 2015, 10:08:41 AM »
The Tape Project uses original master tapes, licensed from the owner. Since The Tape Project introduced the idea of releasing real time duplicates of original master tapes a few other groups and individuals have begun to produce similar products. In some cases the provenance of the recording used to make the duplicates is not at all clear. A tape duplicate made from a safety copy, a production master sent to an overseas affiliate or an EQ'd copy used for cutting a lacquer is not being made from an original master.

These tapes are an investment in our cultural heritage. Be sure you know what you are getting. Ask the maker of your tape what the provenance of the master tape is. We are always happy to share information about the provenance of the masters we use with our customers.

Afro/American Sketches / TP-026 getting ready to ship!
« on: April 23, 2015, 02:46:10 PM »
We are putting the finishing touches on the first run of TP-026, Oliver Nelson's Afro/American Sketches. Along with its talented composer/musician this album has a bunch of other great things going for it. It's a jazz orchestra, and the complexity and texture of orchestral music is something that tape excels in delivering. And it was recorded by a giant, Rudy Van Gelder. The sonics of the brass and percussion on this album are quite mesmerizing. Charter subscribers should see their copies soon and we will have TP-026 for sale in our online store right after that.

General Discussion / Thank you!
« on: January 20, 2015, 10:41:21 AM »
Just want to say thanks again for all of the business you have been bringing to us. Albums are shipping out of here at a crazy pace. For the first time ever we are having to work out a shipping schedule between Tape Project and Bottlehead, who share the same shipping room.

You may notice that several titles went out of stock over the past week and a half. We are working to tighten up the restocking time to meet the increased demand. If you have been considering any of the albums currently in stock, it might be prudent to grab one before they run out.

Tape Project Albums - general / Price increase looming
« on: January 19, 2015, 06:33:37 PM »
Just a reminder that album pricing will be going up from $300 per album to $375 per album on February 1st. Our costs have been rising steadily over the past 7 years, but we had not made any adjustments for ever higher tape, flange or license costs. We must increase our prices to $450 per album to keep the project viable, and we will be doing so soon. To try to soften the blow we are going to do this price increase in increments. The first increase will be to $375 on February 1st, 2015.

I will also note that after just a week and a half 25% of the stock buildup we did for the new website launch is already sold. Albums are leaving here in stacks every day. Some are already out of stock and might not be back in stock until after Feb 1. So it may be prudent to consider picking up some of the in-stock titles before the end of the month.

Tape Project Albums - general / Inventory
« on: December 09, 2014, 04:29:46 PM »
Hopefully everyone is noticing the frequently updated listing of albums we have in stock at the top of the forum. Though it seems a little quiet around here these days we are in fact cranking out the albums, as you can see in the image of our new album inventory storage shelves.

In fact we have made so many albums over the past 7 years that we are facing the replacement of some of our worn out packaging production equipment. As always our early subscribers will get the first production of any new release, and we will have albums available for everyone just as soon as those are shipped. The album inventory boost is being done in conjunction with a several month long upgrade to the Tape Project web site that is nearing completion. With that site will come an easy to use shopping cart with up to date inventory info on every album.

Hooker 'n' Heat / Now in production
« on: November 21, 2014, 05:25:15 PM »
We have received the first of the dupes from the studio and will begin packaging these albums to ship next week. This album is based on the double album originally released as Liberty LST-35022 in 1971. The original album was a double album and thus Paul was saddled with the difficult job of choosing which tracks to feature on our release, since we can only fit the equivalent of one very full LP on two reels. I think he did a great job of delivering the 10 best performances, including the awesome Boogie Chillen' No.2. Paul also did a nice job of preserving some of the inevitable conversation between artists and engineers that one finds on every session tape, just as was done on the original release.

The three of us love The Hook, and with so many recordings made by him over the years you can bet that this had to be a top notch album for us to decide to license it.  The personnel in Canned Heat at the time were huge fans of Hooker and it shows in the performance as they back his unique blues boogie style to perfection. The call and response between Hooker and Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson on harmonica positively glows with the respect you can tell they had for each other's playing. This was the last of Wilson's recordings. He was an early member of the tragic 27 Club that has claimed the likes of Hendrix, Joplin and Winehouse, making this capture all that much more important. Paul's mastering shows a whole lot of love on this tape. The music was in it, and it got to come out.

Hi docb.
This is Steve from The Analog Dept.
I recently put up some Otari service and operation manuals on my website manuals page.
here's a link:
http://www.theanalogdept.com/manuals.htm
I've got three manuals and one ad brochure.
the manuals are:
mx5050 BII parts list
mx5050 BII  ops and maintenance
mx5011 ops and maintenance
mx5050 BII ad brochure
your site is welcome to them.
I looked for a place on your site where one might find them and couldn't find.  Perhaps I didn't look hard enough.  So I thought I'd share.
