Six Moons and the Tape Project
« on: June 25, 2008, 02:19:19 PM »
Michael Lavorgna of Six Moons was at my place for a listening session on the 23rd. it was primarily focused on vinyl playback as I only have the first 2 tapes thus far, but after dinner we did play both TP001 and 002.

He took lots of pics of the system, the deck and the reels and packaging. I'm hoping we'll see something at Six Moons' website sometime in early July.

Michael is a great guy and a lot of fun to hang out with. This is actually his second visit with me in my listening room. The Seduction pre is still breaking in, and has not reached it's full potential yet, but it was really beginning to open up while the second reel of Dave Alvin was spinning..

Here is the link to Michael Lavorgna's visit. Notice the opening photo is a nice shot of my Doc modified RS1500 with a Tape Project logo reel ready to go.

Hi Bob, glad to hear from you. We have some heavy duty systems among out membership. And some HUGE collections. astrotoy has one gigantic lp collection but I wonder if he has serious competition? Have you ever seen 15k records in a house?

What you say! I can't imagine what that would look like. 15K LP's is a humongous collection and one that I would love to have. Well, I'll have to be happy with my measly several hundred and like it.

I've begun building a large collection of classical and jazz (shall I say the word) CD's and am now looking at several players from China. I've read some reviews and several look really great stat wise. However, only a few are SACD/CD player combination. Well, I can't have it all can I?

hey guys-

Thanks for the nice words about the system. I have amassed a fairly large vinyl collection myself (slightly south of 6K, but growing).

I only wish Micheal Lavorgna's visit could have come after the arrival of Tapes 3-6. There is just some stunning stuff that really shows what is possible when the envelope gets pushed. I never would have thought anything could best my Walker/Bluelectric TT for playback, but after doing a head to head of the Albeniz LP and tape: The tape wins, and not by a little..

Hey Bob, a buddy of mine has one of the Onix CD players for his bedroom system and is pretty happy with it. He has a full blown EMM Labs system too so he's very critical. There's an Onix CD-5se on A-gon for $250 right now and there's several places that mod those too. I wouldn't worry too much about SACD. I have one and the selection isn't that great (some of them are just plain bad sounding too) but they do sound a little more full. Resolution wise, I prefer high res downloads ( 96/24 ) and I'm thinking that I can fool with the files (maybe upsample add dither and downsample back to 96k) to get the fullness.

I have have to mail-order for CD's, so the problem with me was finding
a online CD store that has something other than just last weeks top 10.
I have been just starting a music collection, so CD's are the only option
I have until I get a R2R.

I seem to have the same fealing about SCAD's ... just a little better than CD's
I buy SCAD's hoping the mastering is better than Wall-Mart $2.99 special CD's.
It seems all the CD's that (only a few) went from LP to CD with no digital enhancement
sound the best. The one thing nobody has control is the mastering and *compression*
used on digital media and multi-track hype. From what little I have played
analog sources (The Tape Project) seems to me the way to goto since I know
I get the *reel* music.
