Boy,.. I'm with you on that one Jay! I just love #7 but the other day I wasn't real sure what album #8 was going to be. I went to the TP home page and when my eyes fell on "Waltz" I got a protracted case of goosebumps. I think if the world ran out of gas before I got it on my machine, I'd have no problem walking the 50 miles from my house to the "Tape Shed" to get my copy.

I was pleasantly pleased to find an unannounced bundle of joy on my doorstep this afternoon from TP.
I have no idea what is inside.
A competancy test perhaps?

Good deal Xavier. That would be a real bummer to have to head home knowing a tape is just days away. Your visits to San Diego must be like Xmas.

In general, how long should I have to wait to receive a tape? I purchased my subscription on July 6 - haven't seen a tape yet.

It kinda depends on where you are on the que I think, and or where they are in complted tapes.

Check elswhere on the forum or Tape Project site, but I believe the plan was to fulfill the first  Charter subscriptions  as each album becomes available then go back and take care of others. They can't run all titles simultaneously and it is a time consuming real time duplication process.
I am a selective subscriber - number 111, joined in March and received tapes 001 and 002 so far in early July.

Hi Tom, if you're starting to wonder, contact Romo and he should be able to tell you where you're at. There a number of variables so to really know, it's best to go to the source (it beats the hell out of not knowing or expecting something sooner than is realistic)[email protected]
Anyone wondering about shipping info should contact Michael.

Tom, sometimes it takes a few days for him to get to his emails, find where you are in the queue, and then get back to folks. He's a real good guy, but busy with multiple hats to wear(seems like all these guys are,.. don't they know there's a recession going on!).
Did you ever find that manual?

I suspect mid Sept, as people may want to spend the last few days of summer

then you put on that tape you were saving and ...

Ok guys time to find out when the next tapes are coming?

Jay
Title: Re: Latest shipping News
Post by: Ben on September 09, 2008, 09:17:08 PM
That is easy ... when doc gets my check in the mail of course. :)
Well I know I want the tapes before it gets -40F, I have to hike to the
Post Office both ways in the snow. ;)
Now the hard part ... to pick out 6 tapes I like.
-----------------
I expect a few weeks at least before I get a tape as I am at bottom of totem pole,
but that gives me more time to get my system set up. I still need few more
things like a Service and Operations manual and Tape deck cleaning supplies.
The other stuff  like hubs, and reels, and music I had to get off ebay, and they should be arriving in the  next two weeks.
It really depends just what the next reel will be -- Creek bank or
Saxophone Colossus and what I decide to pick out ... all hard choices
as I want a little of everything.

The next tape should be "Waltz ,.." with "Creek,.." and " Colossus" last. At least that's the order on the titles page.
Good news should be just around the bend.

Title: Re: Latest shipping News
Post by: ironbut on September 28, 2008, 11:27:22 AM
I know that lots of tapes have been shipping this last week. I think that catching up on earlier releases has been keeping the production line occupied for the last month or so (since 007 was shipped). That's a hell of a lot of tapes if you think about it. The more members that have subscribed since the last "catch up" runs, the longer they take. And with the increase in the number of subscribers, the longer each "current" run takes.
As much as I can't wait to get my hands on the Bill Evans tape, the long wait between titles means that the Tape Project is getting more financially solid. I think that we're all anxious to see the titles released on a more regular schedule, I think we're all in agreement that the unparalleled standards that they have established are well worth the wait.
For folks hoping that these tapes will be shipping like a magazine subscription, I agree that it would be great, but while subscriptions keep rolling in, it's too much to hope for. It's not a production focused process but rather a quality focused one of the very highest order. As a result, any little glitch can't be overlooked and has to be wrestled to conclusion. I know from my own work that when you're working toward perfection, scheduling gets pushed way down the list of priorities. In my opinion, this is the only way to go.
I don't intend to make excuses for the Tape Project but what we have here requires a different mind set from what we're used to. I know that I've had to adjust to it and I hope that my fellow subscribers will also.

I'd make a fortune here if I was selling Heart Pills. :)
I found out about the TTP  around Dec 2007, but I decided to get
a R2R before I subscribed. Was that the way with most of the people
here, get a R2R and then subscribe?
Title: Re: Latest shipping News
Post by: steveidosound on September 28, 2008, 05:13:46 PM
Sort of.
I have had some sort of R2R machine(s) my entire life.
I still have not actually played the 2 tapes I have gotten so far as I don't have a machine I am absolutely sure is physically and electronically optimized for the tapes.  I was going to use one of my older transports with a Seduction kit, which I bought but have not assembled. It also meant the restoration of an old transport which is a big deal to get exactly right. I acquired a non-working Technics (electronics worked but had transport issues) only to use it in trade for another older Japanese machine from Pioneer which is modular  and has 2 track 2 channel and IEC or NAB EQ or 4 track 4 channel. I actually have 2 of those now and am trying to get other things done so I can clean/lubricate/align repair as needed to get them running absolutely properly. Thus far, I have only throughly cleaned the tape path and demagnetized both transports. The real work is ahead.
Yes, I am a bit paranoid about slapping something I paid that much for on some deck that will not show them off or possibly even hurt them through issues with magnetized  heads or hidden oxide residue somewhere that will scrape them or a transport that will stress them in any way. And I know that I have a long road ahead to bring the rest of my system up to a level where I can even begin to appreciate the sound quality of the tapes.
Beside the initial investment for my 6 tapes and the Seduction kit, it will probably cost me thousands more to get to a place where I can really hear what is on them. My mickey mouse hodge podge of random 70s-2000s pre-amps transports, solid state amplifiers crossovers and speakers, all tied together with generic cables and  speaker wire is not even in the same league with the rest of your systems. It is pretty, as the term goes, "mid-fi".

I did hear some TP tapes at that get together in the SF bay area mentioned on another thread. They are amazing.

There you are Charles. I guess I can recall the bloodhounds now.
Pizza? Magazines? Heck, it took 500 posts before they realized my true calling and put it under my avatar.

Regarding info about #8,.. I was up at the studio on Saturday and there was a huge stack of tapes. Michael told me that these were awaiting artwork (I'm not sure if that includes the boxes but I didn't see an equally huge stack of those) so I'm sure that as soon as what they need to complete the package arrives, the big brown trucks will be bringing smiles to all our faces (or twisted gobs as I like to put it).
I can't recall if the subject came up on this forum, but "Waltz,.." was the release that finding decent artwork was giving the guys fits. Fantasy didn't have any so it was " Go Fish" time for Doc and the boys. This was a long time ago and I know they had offers to scan some original record covers (I don't know how that worked out). I do know that they won't accept second best unless forced to.
You can be sure that they know that we're all dying to hear it but it ain't cake till it's done.
Title: Re: Latest shipping News
Post by: docb on October 09, 2008, 10:33:56 AM
We've been running artwork for the catch-up subscriptions before we do the Waltz art - though I have already sent a few samples down to the studio for the guys to see. We've already sent art for Number White and Blackjack David, and the past two days I have done 20 Arnold covers, 20 Cray covers and right now I'm running 20 Oistrakh covers. JP is coming in today to hand trim them and pack them for shipping to the studio. Once I run a few more odds and ends we will begin the Waltz artwork run of roughly 100 pieces along with the spine labels.

I'm sure some of you have seen the original cover for Waltz for Debby. The nicest thing I can say is that it sucks. I tried several times to get a decent rendition of the vague, colorless shadow of a woman that seems to have been printed from a dirty negative, but just hated it. Then I tried to contact someone who has a website about Bill Evans and seems to know the family to ask for some help getting rights to photos, but never got an answer back. So I have used the really nice photo of Evans that is on the original back cover as the front cover photo, in keeping with the original material as much as is practical.

Doc,

you have set the bar very high for packaging and all the details. 'Waltz For Debbie' will be a defineing tape as it is so well known and everyone has multiple versions of the Lp and digital......it's a reference. thanks for putting all the effort into getting the art work optimal. i like your choice for the cover art.

i wish i had 'Waltz' right now to play on my 'finally here and amazing' Studer....but i will have to settle for hearing it on Hibernian's rig at RMAF.

best regards,

mikel

Nicely done Doc. The original cover is a testament to the minds ability to find a familiar pattern in an almost formless glob (matrix forming). I'm glad you've decided not to spend anymore energy finding a pristine formless glob. I saw the picture on the home page (members should check over there every once in a while) and was hoping that you'd use that one.
While I'm on the subject, there have been 3 Tape Project Newsletters 2 of which contain instructions on how to use the alignment tape. All members here should be subscribed to it.

I suspect sleeping outside the studio doors, waiting for the NEXT release makes all the
difference since some time in 2007.  One  advantage is you have more time to get your deck in shape if it needs minor tune ups. Right now I have a noisy pinch roller waiting to be fixed.

BTW does feel that more of the subscribers do seem to be from the West
rather than the East. Do most of the people have tube or valve equipment
rather than transistor amps I wonder?

A question about subscriptions and serial numbers.
I note in your subscription information section of the website the following:

"And for the charter subscriber we reserve a low serial number that will match on every album delivered."

I then presume for a selective subscriber like me, matching serial numbers are not the case?
I ask because I just got my 3rd tape - The Robert Cray, out of 6 (ordered 1,2,3,4,5,7)  and it's serial number didn't match the 2 I got back in July, the Jaqui Naylor and Dave Alvin, which were both s#111.
Do the serial numbers have anything to do with when you subscribed? I subscribed in March of this year.
Title: Re: Latest shipping News
Post by: docb on October 23, 2008, 01:02:47 PM
Yes, Charter Subscribers have a specific serial number assigned for the entire series. The earlier they subscribed the lower the number they got. Selective subscribers receive tapes with serial numbers outside of those reserved numbers, with no guarantee of what that number will be. That's because can't reserve a number for only six of ten tapes in a series. Your receiving two tapes with number 111 was a lucky coincidence.

We do ship pretty much in the order that subscriptions have come in, with Charter albums shipping first, followed by Selectives. I can't give you much more specific info about why some folks have two tapes while others might have five except that it probably has to do with the fact that albums are pretty much made to order for later subscribers. When a person subscribes will have an influence upon which and how many albums are being shipped to them from one of our catch up runs that occurs between releases.

Post by: docb on December 21, 2008, 12:57:18 PM
I put the brakes on other business entirely and spent the past two weeks going through a very detailed and comprehensive production run for cover art and the gold labels that go on each album cover. I got everyone covered on these items for our catch up run through album TP-008 and I am currently working on TP-009 cover art.

All of this material was sent overnight on Thursday to Michael, who with Paul has been supervising tape production for the same catch up orders and who scheduled all of Friday and Saturday to work on getting this artwork put together with tapes to cover as many catch up orders as possible before Xmas. Unfortunately the snowstorm here seems to have created a snafu and the artwork did not arrive at the studio yet. Tracking is not helping to sort out what's up. In spite of seeing the UPS guy sign for and pick up the box on Thursday the package has not even been logged as picked by the driver up yet. I suspect (actually I fervently hope, as it was a huge amount of work!) that the local UPS hub is just bogged down and that the package will show up Monday.

The snow and ice is a mess here, to the point that UPS wouldn't even come to our house on Friday to pick up a second package of artwork. We have about 6-8 inches of powder over about inch of ice right now with no sign of a letup. Tech Shawn is snowed in at his place with a couple of amp kits he took home with him to build while he's waiting for the ice to melt. Dunno if you guys saw it on the national news but across the water in Seattle a couple of school buses slid down a steep street above a freeway and broke thru a retaining wall at the bottom, stopping with the front wheels of the buses dangling over the freeway below. A real winter wonderland. Must be that global warming...(http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/ABPub/2008/12/19/2008540256.jpg)

Looks like something out of Jurassic Park!  I remember when I was in NY, if you didn't chisel the ice and snow out, the mailman wouldn't even deliver. On a related note, I heard a story on NPR that a town was mixing garlic salt with their road salt this season. I'd guess that it would make a significant increase or decrease in business at the local Italian food joints.
Thanks a million for the production update. So be careful out there. I don't think anyone wants a limping Santa Schmalle this year.
Happy Holidays!

Man, since I busted my leg I am a prissy little old lady on slippery terrain. I always have to hike with a pole now, and I have to concentrate fully on walking in this icy stuff because I can't always catch myself when I lose my balance anymore. They screwed my two leg bones together right above my ankle and I can't twist my foot in certain directions with any stability. There's no real warning when I've passed the limit other than the next thing I'm going OW! and trying to figure out the least destructive way to hit the ground. I watch the kids skating down the frozen driveway in their boots, hootin' and hollerin', and I get really jealous. Do I sound like I'm ready for spring??????

Most of the artwork arrived at the studio very late yesterday and another small shipment should be arriving at the studio tomorrow. Romo has been busting a hump to get as many as possible of albums TP-001 thru TP-008 that folks are waiting for ready to ship. He's already about halfway through processing somewhere around 80 items, that are scheduled to ship out on Friday. Half the company is away on Xmas vacation so we will be gearing up for packaging and shipping TP-009 and TP-010 after the new year and CES.

Howdy All,
Sorry I have been absent here for awhile. Working hard to get the tapes out to everyone.
I wanted to updates Dan's last post. The artwork that was overnighted from Bottleheadquarters on Thursday arrived Tuesday, the Friday Overnight Arrived today around 4pm. Needless to say I needed both shipments to get all of the catch up tapes out (1-8 to those who haven't gotten theirs yet). UPS informed me that they will not even begin pickups again until Monday. So instead of shipping in time for Christmas, UPS held us up. Now I won't be able to get them to you by New Years. Bummer. I'm very sorry. We all wanted everyone to have new Tapes before the end of the year. Oh So Close but just not quite.
That being said, I have 112 ish tapes ready to go out. Take that mister UPS man....
Standby... They a' Comin'

Merry Christmas to all...
And thank you for being a part of this with us.
Happy Listening
Romo

Thanks for the big push Romo, I know what a huge job it is. UPS is really messed up here. Every package is getting pushed back by a day, then another, then another. Looks like a lot of it got stuck between the local office in Bremerton and the hub in Seattle during the snowstorm. Going both ways too, not just headed out. Bought myself a new Telecaster body and a hemp cone speaker for Xmas, originally due to arrive Tuesday, then yesterday, and they are both still out in the ozone. Heard that FEDEX decided to do deliveries today. UPS is letting their guys be with their families. After seeing our driver struggling with that monster brown truck on 2" of ice all over town, I think he deserves a break.

I just received the same 3 as Zhou Bin.  I put Waltz for Debbie on right away - it sounds fantastic!  I also have the SACD, and will have to give the two a head to head comparison once I get the R2R in the same system as the SACD player.

4 down, 6 to go from the first series - I can hardly wait!  Thanks again, guys
