Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Otari M5050-BII doesn't Rewind/ FF
« on: June 15, 2015, 07:35:01 PM »
Thank you Ironbut and Blunderbus for your answer.
It's the first time that I have such problems despite having previously bought old pre-recorded tapes that I'm using with no problems, maybe cheaper tapes are less prone to the sticky syndrome.
You're right I'll never buy old tapes again. Let's keep the supply chain in business.
Regards,
Juan

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Otari M5050-BII doesn't Rewind/ FF
« on: June 13, 2015, 07:45:58 PM »
Hi:
My name is Juan, I became a Forum member three years ago, but It's my first post. I fell in love with reel to reel  sound from the first time a heard to a reel to reel tape many years ago when I was a teenager. now I'm 63.
I have been using  an Otari M5050 BII  four years without any problems but recently I bought some Ampex GM-3600 tapes, when using them  my Otari plays them well but when trying to rewind or fast forward the reels don't move or move very slowly.
The tapes seem to be good (no mold, no sticky nor gummy signs), Has anybody had the same issue?
I would be very pleased if someone helps me to figure out  what's happening.
Excuse my English.
Regards,
Juan

Raw Tape / RMGI Tape orientation
« on: September 08, 2012, 06:48:02 PM »
I just bought a RMGI Studio Master 911 tape, but I'm confused   it has one brown bright side  and the other is dull black, as threaded it seems like the brown bright side runs over the heads, maybe it has been bad wounded on the reel. Can anybody tell me which is the correct orientation?
Thanks,
Juan Zubiaga

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Otari MX-5050 BII capstan shaft cleaning
« on: August 09, 2012, 07:31:14 PM »
I'm new to reel to reel decks, recently I got an Otari Mx-5050 BII,  everything  works fine but  I can not remove some hard black material adhered to the capstan shaft , as it is on the outer side of the tape path it does not seem to be from tape material but from pinch roller (pinch roller is not worn) . I have tried using alcohol with no success, don't want to use sandpaper or something abrasive.
I would like to know how to clean the capstan shaft.
Thanks
