Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Tascam 42B To Shop For Modification
« on: October 24, 2012, 09:20:16 PM »
Good evening all,

Tomorrow I will be taking my Tascam in for changeover from NAB to IEC. We will also take a look at whether additional RCA's can be install on the rear of the deck so that I can use internal and external electronics. Although it doesn't look like there is room for additional RCA's we'll see. I am still hopeful that the playback heads will produce the kind of signal that will permit a tape head playback pre amp to provide high volume even with my modified Magnapan 1.6 speakers. I am very excited.

General Discussion / What Tubes Are You Using In The Repro and Eros?
« on: September 26, 2012, 02:45:08 PM »
Hello all,
Just wondering what tubes (brand and model numbers) are you using in your Repro and Eros? Are they newer tubes or NOS? Did you arrive at your present choice by tube rolling, reviews or advice from others? Finally, how did your choice of tubes impact the sound you are getting now? Thanks for your response.

General Discussion / How possible is it????
« on: September 01, 2012, 11:22:24 AM »
Good afternoon all,

Is it possible that a non-tube tape head pre amplifier can be made to equal or surpass the sound of a tube unit? Of course here I am asking about outboard pre amps.  Has anyone had the experience of comparing the sound of tube/non-tube pre amps and what was the difference? While I understand that the ability to change tubes gives some difference in sound quality is that enough to dismiss non-tube units? Finally, generally, are tube pre amps more costly to build then their non-tube counterparts? Thanks much for all responses.

Raw Tape / Quantegy 406 Reel to Reel Tape
« on: August 28, 2012, 04:54:29 AM »
Good morning all,

A dear friend of mine has come into a load of Quantegy 406 tape and wants to provide several to me. When I see the name Ampex attached to it during my internet research I am worried. Before I use it, I thought it best to come here to see what other's opinion is of this tape and whether it might be burdened with the dreaded SS problem? Thanks much for all thoughts and experience.

Tape Tech / Tape Playback Head Cables
« on: August 07, 2012, 10:44:32 PM »
Hello all,

I recall reading posts from Ironbut and Paul awhile back regarding their use of silver phono cable with appropriate shielding. It's amazing I am having a difficult finding silver cable under$300 dollars. I thought I could purchase two 24inch cables for less than that. And of course the Van den huls are way out of my money range. Does anyone have suggestions or guidance. It would seem that even used silver phono cables are expensive.

I am preparing to have my Tascam 42B re-wired for IEC playback as well as having the tech bypass the internal electronics and run cables directly from my playback heads. I also thought I read on a post sometime ago that one of our own actually had his tech wire his deck with a switch so that he could use the internal electronics and run cables from the tape heads to an external pre amp.  Thanks for all input.

Good evening all,

I would love to communicate with tape and analog lovers in my area of the USA. I am a member of the Atlanta Audio/Video Club. Are there any members here? I still have not met anyone who's primary focus is music produced via reel to reel tape. I am sure there are some in my area but have not met them. I looks like most of the members here are on the west coast. At least that appears to be where most of the Ampex and Studer owners are (smile). Thanks for your indulgence.

Tape Tech / Eros or Seduction, What To Do?
« on: July 13, 2012, 03:26:12 PM »
Good evening all,

Here is my plight. I've decided to use my Tascam 32-2B tape deck for listening to pre-recorded tapes since it's already NAB/IEC switchable. I will just have to get the tech to add cables from the output tape head. Obviously, the Seduction would have to be modified to use as a tape pre-amp. How do I obtain info regarding the electrical output from my tape head? I have looked through my manual but can't seem to find that info. Or, on the other hand, it may be I don't know what I am looking for regarding specifications.

On a retiree's income I cannot afford the top-of-the-line tape head pre amp, so, my concern is, to be able to determine if the modified seduction will do what I need or will I require the higher output signal from the Eros which was actually designed as a tape head pre amp. I might add, I am using Peter Gunn modified Magnapan 1.6 speakers which require lots of power to sound their best. These speakers are fairly inefficient.  Mind you, it's not a problem now, but I wonder what impact that will have on which tape head pre amp I should be looking for?

I really don't like asking for assistance without being able to give you all the output specification figures for my tape playback heads. At any rate, point me in the right direction please. HELP............

General Discussion / NAB Aluminum Hub Adapters
« on: July 06, 2012, 11:18:52 AM »
Good afternoon all,

Does anyone know if the fancy and sometimes colorful NAB hub adapters will fit any reel to reel than the Revox? And if they fit other tape recorders where would be the very best place to purchase them from and not have to hock my house?

I have seen various colors on Ebay but hesitate to buy because there are some dishonest sellers there. I would hate to make a purchase only to find they don't fit my tape decks.

So,  I am thinking of buying a pair for my Tascam 42B and 32-2B tape decks.  I will thank you in advance for all responses. As always I very much appreciate your input.

Prerecorded Tapes / New Tapes From International Phonographic Inc.
« on: June 08, 2012, 01:43:20 PM »
Hello all,

I just got 2 pre recorded tapes from Jonathan Horwich of International Phonograph Inc. yesterday. I decided to surprise myself and wait to open the package. It reminded me of being a small boy on Christmas eve and trying to stay awake for Santa Claus. I finally opened the box this morning and was surprised by the way the tapes were housed. These were substantial plastic cases with all the information about the musicians and music on the outside. The tapes come "tails out" which is good. I ran these tapes on my Tascam 32-2B because it is switchable between IEC/NAB and that's good. There are actually 3 tapes available. They are: Warne Marsh At The Icehouse, Clare Fischer, Extension, and Henrik Wallin, 4th Balcony Jump. Since I was familiar with Warne Marsh and Clare Fischer, I decided to order those 2 tapes. There is about 30 minutes worth of music on each tape. Each tape included info about who is playing and each tune.

The first tape I played was one by Warne Marsh, At The Ice House. He is Lee Konitz on tenor sax. This is exciting music played by and excellent quintet. The other tape features The Clare Fischer orchestra. Again, this is exciting music beautifully played. The sound on both tapes  wonderful and well recorded. At $150 dollars each I was surprised at how well packaged they were and the high quality of the music. I am more than happy I moved on these tapes.

Raw Tape / Sticky Shed and Quantegy GP9
« on: June 07, 2012, 06:52:14 AM »
Good morning all,

I've read some comments and concerns regarding some of Quantegy's tape offerings, but my interest is in their GP9 tape. The fine gentleman who sold me his Tascam 42B tape deck has offered to sell me a number of reels of Quantegy GP9 for a very good price. My concern is the potential of "sticky shed". I am sure this gentleman thought he was purchasing the best tape available. Plus, these tapes came in a heavy plastic case.

He purchased them back in 2006 and 2007 I believe. He used an excellent audio system turntable and top-of-the-line cartridges to record some of his most precious records. I am not sure he was a guy who spend time in forums like this one, so, may not have known if there were possible problems with the tape. Please comment if you've had personal experience with this tape. By the way, this gentleman says he has never had any problems with this tape. Not being a techie kind of guy I tend to believe him. Thanks all.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Tascam 42B play back heads and IEC setup
« on: June 04, 2012, 08:34:02 PM »
I am thinking that when I get my new/old Tascam 42B, and after inspection, I will take it in to my local tech and have him re-wire the playback heads. Can anyone suggest what cables he should use and where can I obtain them from? I will want to have them in hand when I take the deck in.

Also, can anyone who has the Eros or Tube Repro pre amps tell me what impedance they operate at? Are they adjustable and if so, what's the range? Finally, has anyone modified their tape deck with cables from the playback heads, but retained the use of the internal electronics in the tape deck? Thanks for all comments and input.

Tape Tech / Tascam 42B Spooling Option For Tape Storage
« on: June 01, 2012, 08:23:26 AM »
Good morning everyone,

If UPS delivers it in one piece, I should get my new/old Tascam 42D tape deck next week. One of the primary reasons I purchased this deck is its ability to spool tapes in the re-wind and fast-forward modes. I've heard different suggestions regarding tape storage after play. Is the preferred tape storage playing the tape through then leaving it on the take-up reel with tail out? Or, can I rewind the tape using the spooling mode? Normally, the spooling mode leaves the tape packed well but not tight as would be the case with fast re-wind. If the tape is left on the re-wind reel using the spooling mode would there be a problem with print-through?  Thanks for all suggestions and responses.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Tascam 42B reel to reel
« on: May 31, 2012, 03:54:43 PM »
Hello all,

I was finally able to find a 42B in really good shape from a fellow Audiogoner. I was more than happy not to have to go to Ebay for this deck. The gentleman who is selling me the deck appears to be a real gentleman and selling the deck to me at a good price. At least I am satisfied with what he is charging me. This deck is NAB/IEC compatible and that's good too.

He will be shipping from Florida which is not that far from Georgia so that's a plus. Of course, the way the heavy packages are handled by some of the UPS drivers a delivery across the street could be hazardous for a tape deck. I note there does not seem to be many here with Tascam tape decks other than the Tascam BR-20's. Maybe there was not a large number of Tascam 42 or 52 decks sold or produced. I hope it won't be a problem getting parts if I ever need them.

This gentleman also threw in 5 rolls of RGM 468 which should be OK. He also gave me 5 rolls of Quantegy GP9 which I am not familiar with. Is there any need for concern regarding shedding? Thanks all and appreciate all comments.
