Prerecorded Tapes / Re: Kind of Blue 4 track on Ebay
« on: September 03, 2007, 12:53:51 PM »
As a jazz lover, Miles Davis was one of my top artist. However, I would never pay $200 plus for the "Kind Of Blue" recording. I think the person on Ebay is asking too much money. Plus, how do we know what kind of condition that tape is in? I must say I've never been stung on Ebay, but, I've never purchased tapes from anyone there.

I might consider paying that much for a Miles Davis colaboration with the Gil Evans orchestra, especially if it were to become available on 2 track. I would also consider paying $200 plus for Maria Schneider and her orchestra. What a great orchestra she has and what a great conductor and writer she is. All of her recordings are "Gold Nuggets". And finally, I don't want to leave out the great Stan Kenton. I loved his orchestra and most of his music. Then there is Duke Ellington and Count Basie........

Well, I'll stop musing here because I doubt tapes of Miles and Gil Evans, Maria Schneider or any of the other greats will ever become available on tape in my time. But it's great to think about the possibility.

Dear Doc B.,

Do you have any idea when the new "Take Up Reels" might become available to purchase? Also, do you a rough idea what they will cost? I want to be prepared to purchase when they become available. Thank you so much.

Dave,
Please keep me in the loop regarding your live recordings. I am over here in Baltimore and just love classical music, particularly large scale chroal works. Of course I have loved modern jazz since I begain listening to Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, T. Monk and Dizzy Gillesspie, Billy Holliday, Jeri Southern, Chris Connors and many others.

What you are about to embark upon sounds very exciting and a wonderful project I might add. I would just appreciate know how you are progressing. Thank you so much.

General Discussion / Re: Where do I start?
« on: August 29, 2007, 04:33:59 PM »
Hello John,
I am a long time music lover as well. My favorite music is jazz and classical music, large and small scale choral works in particular. I love the human voice. I recently purchased a 2 track, 7.5 and 15ips tape deck from "www.audioproz.com" (617-926-8020).

There is a very fine gentleman there by the name of Vince, who was most helpful to me. He spent about 1/2 hour on the phone explaining various tape decks, problems, repair complexities, etc.  My machine will ship this Friday. I purchased the Tascam 32-2B recorder with adjustable bias so that I can choose a tape formulation later.

Audioproz show a listing of the various tape decks they have for sale. Vince is the owner and makes certain the deck you select  is checked and pristine before the machine leaves their facility. I saw at least two series 1500 Technic Tape Decks for sale since I started looking. Call Vince and ask, because he has decks for sal he has not listed. As a matter of fact  I called about another Tascam 32-2B that was sold. However, Vince had another one that was 9 out of a possible 10 regarding condition. So, I got that one for a few dollars more, plus it comes with tape adaptors.

I don't mean to be so long winded but just wanted to share my experience while trying to purchase the most 2 track/15ips tape deck I could get for the money. Welcome aboard my friend.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Teac A7300 2 track

Mr. Rick Hopkins,
Thank you so much for this very useful information. However, the shop in Berlin appeared to have some very interesting stuff, in particular the different reel adaptors. However, I was not able to understand a thing. And further more, how were you able to find out what the prices were in US currency?  I would love to order a set of those reel adaptors. Thanks again for writing.

I recently purchased a Teac 32-2B 2 track, 7.5 and 15ips machine in great condition. Heads are nearly new with new belts and innards check for problems. I am now wondering which tape to use and where to purchase it.

I am also concerned about keep the heads clean and demagnatized if the latter should be a concern. I want to be prepared for the new super 2 track tapes coming out soon.

Is there anything else I should be concerned about? Again, I appreciate every bit of help I can get. I am really looking forward to a brand new future in great music produced for our tape machines. Thanks all.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Teac A7300 2 track
« on: August 24, 2007, 07:41:32 PM »
Hello all and thank you for all the assistance you've provided so far. I have just purchased a Teac A 7300 2 track 7.5 and 15ips deck. I am waiting to sell my house and will relocate to Florida. Once sold, I will then find a great place to send the A7300 for refurbishing. However, until then, I plan to play the few 2 track tapes I have.

Can anyone guide me to where I can pick up some very good and good looking NAB hubs for this deck?  Are there any metal hubs to be found anywhere? I will also be looking for 2 very nice 10.5 metal reels. Any guidance I can get will be welcomed. By the way, if there is anyone familiar with how to begin taking care of this deck myself I would appreciate your knowledge and guidance. Thank you all for making me a part of this wonderful experience.

Of course my plan is to get this deck prepared for the Tape Project's upcoming 2 track tapes. I am very excited about this.

Dear Friend Steve,

I am pleasantly surprised that you would take the time to provide this kind of information to a newbie. As a matter of fact, this is the very first forum of this kind where everyone has been very kind. That you are willing to research and come up with so much useful information is just wonderful.

I am located in Baltimore Maryland right now, but planning to relocate to Orlando FL. soon. I am preparing to move, but getting everything boxed up and ready to go is a real job. And of course trying to sell a house in this economy is heavy. So it might be a while before I get to go anywhere. And money is a little tight right now, so whatever I purchase will have to be within my means.

However, I am going to spend time getting information from the links you so kindly provided. I will be back in touch. And again, thank you so much. This is wonderful. Have a great evening.

Craig, You've written a good piece regarding the show and I am grateful. I am also a love of jazz and big band jazz is one of my favorite things to listen to. I still listen to Stan Kenton, Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Gil Evans, Maria Schneider, Sam Rivers and many others. I am certain you did an outstanding job recording the set. My hat is off to you because I have at least some idea what's involved in the acoustics, miking, etc. Thank you for sharing with us.

Thank you Paul, I have no problem sharing my name here. Most other forum participants use a "User Name". However, I am Bob Williams. And thank you for advising me regarding tape speed. I am looking for a useful deck that wil play at that speed plus can accomodate 10.5in reels. I've been to ebay but have been out bidded on at least two machines. I am waiting for word back from a gentleman who has a Teac A 7300. We'll see what happens. I assume that this is a good deck? I would love to get something that I don't have to immediately take to the shop (smile). Any help here would be very much appreciated. Thank you again.

I recently read in the Absolute Sound about the "Tape Project" and wanted to learn more. I presently have a Pioneer 1020L tape machine. However, I now understand after reading some of the input here that the project tapes will be 15ips. So, it appears my machine will not work. Am I correct in my assessment?

Also, does anyone know where I can get my machine looked at and checked out? There does not seem to be a problems, but I know after all these years, it needs looking after. Any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.
