General Discussion / Tape Coverage in The Absolute Sound
« on: June 09, 2013, 10:59:54 AM »
I didn't see a mention of this before, so here goes. The latest issue of The Absolute Sound (July/August, 2013) has quite a lot of coverage of RTR, starting with a review of the United Home Audio UHA-HQ tape deck (which Valin describes as the best source component he has ever heard, regardless of format). He also has a shorter review of the SonoruS ATR10, and also a list of available 15ips tapes. Very good reading. V

Somehow he managed to hear a dupe of a safety master of Sgt. Pepper....the description will make your mouth water. We can only dream!

General Discussion / Re: All That Jazz

For me, YouTube has been indispensable for viewing videos of artists/songs that I haven't otherwise ever seen. A couple that come to mind:

The Byrds doing "Hey, Mr Tambourine Man"....with a special guest, Bob Dylan. David Crosby was still in the group, so what, about 1967?

Joan Baez doing an acoustic version of "Love is Just a Four Letter Word" from her kitchen in Woodside, California. This was pretty recent, but it sounds better as an all-acoustic song than it does in the Nashville gussied up version done back in 68 or so on the album of Dylan covers.

We Five doing "You Were On My Mind" when it first came out. The Honeycombs doing "Have I the Right" with the drumming of the great Honey Lantree. Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles doing "Take It Easy". Paul McCartney doing the first live performance of "A Day In the Life". Jake Shimabukuro doing "While My Guitar (ukulele?) Gently Weeps". Buffalo Springfield doing "Mr. Soul". There is so MUCH. Gordon Lightfoot in his prime. Sometimes I find myself browsing from one artist/song to the next, and I find an hour has passed.

Doc, I haven't received a new TP tape in a year...and I subscribed to Series III fully 18 months ago. When should we start to see the logjam in the TP start to clear? I appreciate how busy you are with the Bottlehead business, but I am pretty sure that the loyal TP subscribers should be in the queue as well.

It would be great to hear when I might receive my copy of this. I have sent an inquiry, but haven't heard back. How is production going?

Thanks,

Tom

I am sorry that I have to miss yet another get together.....that's what happens when you have a 12 year old - weekend afternoons are difficult. This one sounds especially interesting! That evening I will be attending the Leo Kottke concert in Mountain View.

Personally, I find the Reiner performance extremely well played, but a bit too stiff and buttoned up. Stokowski, anyone?

General Discussion / The Shins

FWIW, the Shins are receiving a huge amount of air time and positive feedback from KFOG here in the Bay Area.   DJs love 'em.

Suggestion Box / Re: Crazy end of year suggestion

Steve, I don't know about Leroy Anderson - I have the Mercury SACD of his music, and the music is too lightweight for my taste - but I think your idea of RR and TP co-productions is terrific - so much that I suggested it myself a few months ago, under the "Nojima" subject line in the suggestion box. I also still hope for the live performance idea that the guys were kicking around a few gin and tonics ago.

Steve and Larry - thanks for the comments on these tapes. I hope to soon join you as owners of all four.
