Zzeon,

I responded early on to the SS request and was more than happy to send along a number of sealed tapes.  All most likely sticky.  I wouldn't have a use for them.  Shipping was prepaid and painless. I'm helping myself and fellow tape users.  Please don't politicize this process and site.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Pure alcohol
« on: June 06, 2012, 07:01:05 PM »

Doc B. said "Any kind of high percentage (low water content) alcohol will work."

Try automotive diesel gas line antifreeze. I have Berkebele 2+2 here that says 99% pure isopropyl.  I called them a couple of years ago and was told off record that they can't say 100% because as soon as it is opened it will start to absorb a bit of moisture. I transfer quickly from the bottle to another container to limit exposure. Maybe pointless but it makes me feel better.

General Discussion / Re: RMAF Lift Lounge at 2:00

Two of us did the best we could to be visible at 2:00.  We had a TP tape on the table and Paul with a beer.  Sitting close to the main entrance path too.  Oh well, we tried.....

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Lyrec FRED as a transport
« on: September 20, 2009, 02:09:24 PM »
If the nail hasn't already been put in the Fred's proverbial coffin please allow me.  Some capstan-less designs are great.  Some...uh...aren't.  The Fred won't do it for you.  A Frida, on the other hand, could provide lots of pleasure.  I consider it to be smarter than I am.

Tape Tech / Re: Always wanted twelve inches?

I'm looking at cutting down larger flanges also.  Lathe or waterjet?  That's the question.

Tape Tech / Always wanted twelve inches?

A dilemma on the horns of which Brother Rich U47 found himself recently, namely recording digitally or running the risk of running out of tape due to a lack of 30cm reels, set me to thinking and I offer this solution.  While this is still very much a beta. the concept works and can be assembled with a plastic hub, either one or two junker LPs depending on whether one is fond of a top flange or not, and a bit of glue.  A downside is that you can't just mount a pancake on this, assuming you could find a pancake this size, but when the going gets tough the tough gotta go DIY and sometimes you can't have everything. Holes for your particular reel table and hold-down need to be cut out as well, of course.  Just work slowly and don't split the vinyl.  You saw it here first, kids.....

General Discussion / Another, rather high level, mention of the TP.
« on: December 28, 2008, 08:43:30 PM »
Buried in the Asylum I came across a link to this:

http://philoctetes.org/Past_Programs/Deep_Listening_Why_Audio_Quality_Matters

with the quite appropriate warning that one needs to set aside a few hours before clicking.

The Tape Project gets a quick mention just past 47 minutes in, though not quite by name.  Chris Whitley's "Dirt Floor" would also seem to rise out of here to become a front runner for a series 2 title.  Greg Calbi is the moderator for this roundtable discussion, BTW.  Extremely good stuff, especially if you find yourself snowed in somewhere and can dedicate the time.
