Events / Re: A very special evening with Jacqui Naylor
« on: September 05, 2013, 10:48:18 AM »
Its seems to me that Jacqui's TP #01 was an all-analogue recording  (and a great recording at that)...is this one?  This album as a TP release would sure be nice...(subtle hint intended)...

General Discussion / Re: Bottlehead Repro Output
« on: November 06, 2012, 04:51:03 PM »
Are you listening to the preamp thru the headphone amp? Or are you saying the headphone amp sounded worse than the preamp does through your speaker system?
My comparison was repro directly to headphone amp (some distortion as I indicated) compared to repro to preamp to headphone amp...the amp I use for my speakers doesn't come into as I can't run the repro directly to my power amp without a preamp (no vol. control).

I've never heard any of this distortion through my speakers...thanks

Thank you both for your comments...I'm still puzzled though.  I don't think the EA-8 was clipping, though, as the distortion wasn't in louder passages only....BUT, if it was, why don't I hear it when the repro is routed through my preamp?  I always thought shortening the path of your signal would improve sonics...you know, the "minimum path rule".

I am currently using the XLR outputs of the repro, they go through these "American Recorder" XLR-to-RCA adaptors, then go through Atlas interconnects.  Perhaps my preamp is masking the problem when I use it?

The preamp is currently sounding great, I have had the RCAs at the back all replaced, new caps, and a new selector & gain pots.

But thanks again for the comments...Steve, would you be OK I sent you a PM about this?

In any event...thanks!

General Discussion / Bottlehead Repro Output
« on: November 05, 2012, 08:07:28 AM »
Hi all, this is more a comment/question than some kind of complaint.  Earlier this year, my preamp was out for service (more like "restoration"!) so I wasn't able to listen to my LPs...so I figured I do lots of tape listening.  So I hooked up my Repro directly to my headphone amp...well it just didn't sound right.  There was some kind of distortion, at higher frequencies.  I have never heard this before.

So...my question is: isn't the output from the repro a standard line stage output?  Or is there some mismatch between feeding the repro directly into the headphone amp?

The headphones being used are Stax OAIIs...if there's any distortion/discolouring of the sound, you'll hear it with them...

Since I've got my preamp back everything is back to normal.  I did listen to my tuner and some cassette dubs (don't laugh) at the time and didn't hear any distortion.  If anyone has any insights on this, I would love hear them....thanks

My s# is 048  How did you make the download paper art fit on the reel?[/quote]

It's called cutting it up to fit!  Am I technologically advanced or what?  Seriously, though, Steve's idea of a track listing is great.  If you don't want to cut up the download paper to fit the reel why not scan the graphics from the front cover and cut that up?

BTW, do you other guys who got the Shins tape have the number 120 on the back next to the bar code?

Hi Steve, mine says 92 on the back, so it looks  like it is indeed the serial number.  BTW, I cut up the download slip (the paper with the download code on it) and glued it to the reel as a label.  It looks spiffy!  Myself,  I don't like the idea of "unlabelled" reels of pre-recorded tapes...it's like asking for a recording "acccident" or what!

General Discussion / Article on Reference Recordings returning to LPs...
« on: January 04, 2012, 09:27:59 AM »
An interesting article in the current issue #91 of Ultra High Fidelity magazine regarding Reference Recordings getting back in vinyl reissues & a comparison of one LP with the CD reissue.
Here is the link:

http://www.uhfmag.com/Issue91/UHF91.pdf

The issue can be viewed as a PDF file & the article is on page 31 and on page 32... lo and behold a picture of TP's own Paul Stubblebine, sporting the TP uniform of course.

Here's a hint: this Stravinsky LP would make a great addition to Series 3....

The Sermon / Liner notes for the "Sermon"
« on: November 26, 2011, 10:01:45 AM »
As I was sitting back & enjoying the "Sermon" last night I was reading through the album cover notes and something struck me, to quote from the notes "The original LP version did not include the songs from Reel A".  Well...Reel B only has 2 songs on it...there are 4 songs on Reel A...so the orginal BN album only came with the 2 songs on Reel B?

Is this a  misprint perhaps?

I don't think I've ever seen an album with only 2 songs on it...one 20 min. and the other 8 min....perhaps it was originally a 10 inch record?

BTW, it is a fantastic album & it sounds great!  I never heard of Jimmy Smith before but this was sure a great pick by the TP crew.  Thanks!

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: yarlung records?
« on: August 31, 2011, 08:31:04 AM »
As far as availability, the tapes will be out in Sept. on one reel containing selections from the CD/LP and will cost $125/reel

Hi Myles...at this price point my guess would be 7 inch reels at 7 1/2 IPS?  Hopefully they will be 2 track.  Using some of my ancient 2 track tapes as a reference, 2-track at 7 1/2 IPS can certainly sound darned good.

cheers

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Otari mx5050 reel adjusting discs

If you are referring to shims to line up the tape path when you use 10.5 inch metal reels, that sit under the reel, I bought some last year for my Otari  MX-5050 from Jeff at J-Corder.com.  If you guys recall, he is the one who does refurbs/custom rebuilds on Technics decks...he sells shims that are made of a soft vinyl type material.  I bought 2 from him, they are fine.

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: One Rare Miles Davis Tape?
« on: April 10, 2010, 12:34:47 PM »
Yikes!
That really went up there.

You're not kidding Steve!  I didn't think it would actually go up that high myself, maybe $500 or something like that.  And buying something for this kind of $$ at  a LP/tape sale when you can actually inspect it is one thing, but bidding this kind of $$ from an internet auction where you can't even inspect it first is another thing.

I guess I will have to be content with dreaming of a TP reissue of KOB.  With all the LP reissues of this album you would think Columbia records would be OK with it....

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: One Rare Miles Davis Tape?
« on: April 08, 2010, 03:17:42 PM »
I just thought of something; because this tape is actually 2-track, that would date it no earlier than the late 1950s/early 1960s?  Would this be a correct assumption?  My impression is that pre-recorded R2R pretty much went to 4-track only in the early 1960s.  I have (I believe) an early 1960s RCA catalogue that lists both 2 & 4 track pre-recorded tapes.

You would think a TP release of KOB would definitely "deflate" the prices of this tape for sure!

Check out this ebay listing.  Kind of Blue on 2 track is something I certainly haven't seen before.  It will be interesting to see how high this auction goes.  Any guesses?

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: Quinton Tape Review
« on: February 13, 2010, 10:18:36 AM »
there appear to be significant issues with the order fulfillment side of their operation at the present time.  Larry

Hi Larry, just to give my 2 cents here...I ordered the set of Quinton taps last spring...from the time I initiated the money transfer I received the entire set of tapes in about 3 weeks.  1 week of this was shipping time.  So in my experience it was pretty reasonable, but perhaps they now have production issues, don't know.  Also, my copy of Sabina Hank's tape also has the same number 47 on it, so I don't think this indicates an actual "serial number", but like you my expertise of the German language is limited....

It sure doesn't look bent from what I can see.  So I will try adjusting the nut to get guides to move a bit.  Thanks again.
