Reel to Reel Tape Machines / 5050 head block
« on: May 21, 2012, 11:02:02 AM »
Can a 2 trk head block from a 91 Mk IV-2 be interchanged with a 88 Mk III-2 with a 2/4 trk head block? And if so will the machine need to be recalibrated. Is this a difficult proceedure?
Thank You

Thank you for the quick reply! It was also my feeling that indeed it was a switch problem. But why the playing OK for the first few minutes, and then the problem with the mistracking?

I do believe this 5050 was used solely for 2 trk,as I believe it may be the machine that was used on the road to tape the Grateful Dead. That is something that is now being researched.

Thanks again
Jim

General Discussion / 5050 playback problem
« on: January 16, 2012, 07:12:52 PM »
I just recently acquired another 5050 BII 2,and set it up to play a 4trk tape.It statrs playing fine for the first 2 1/2 minutes, then goes haywire,at abot 2 min. 50 sec.,like it is mistracking or trying to play additional channels. I can FF to different parts of the tape, and it remains the same.I can rewind it back to 20sec. and start it playing again, and it is fine until it hits that same 2+ min. Also while the tape is playing,(first 2 min.)I try to change from 2 to 4trk and back, and nothing happens to the sound.I would assume I should hear some kind of difference!
Anyone have any suggestions as to this cause.

Thanks
Jim

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Otari 5050III capstan motor stopped
« on: October 18, 2010, 10:30:02 AM »
My capstn motor has stopped working all of a sudden.I put a 10' reel on the machine, and it run very slowly, and then stopped.I then put a 7" reel on,and noticed the capstan was not moving.I also tried the edit/start button to no avail. Is there a simple solution such as a fuse?

Thank you Steve
That is where I am having the problem, playing commercially pre-recorded tapes, that are some 30 yrs. and older. And I have been going thru them trying to get them stored properly.I also went online to
US recording media to find the Pelon you mentioned in your stick, and it was not listed on the site.I guess
I will have to email them for a quote and availability.

Yes,I did lube the capstan. Also Ironbutt, what do I do with all my older pre-recorded tapes? I have quite a lot of money tied up there.

I have tried a number of tapes, some 2trk and some 4trk. Most are not playing.I have also tried an ampex tape and one did not play, but one that is almost 25min long has played one side without a problem, and is now playing the other side and there does not seem to be a problem so far.I spoke too soon, the tape slowed before about 5min. before it was finished. So what can be done with the tapes that do not want to play? Is baking them a fix? And or do I have some other problem?

I am having a problem with playback, after the play button is depressed. It would slow almost immediately. Then I did the following checks and maintenance, I cleaned the tape path thourghly, adjusted the pinch roller pressure, and checked the brake pressure(which was fine),now the tape will play about halfway thru a tape, then begin to slow.Could it be that I need a new pinch roller? I just acquired this deck, and it has been sitting for some years unused.Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks Doc
I appreciate the input. Now I have another problem, and I don't know if you can help. The forward tension arm is loose at the top of the arm.Can that be tightened from the top,or do I have to get to it underneath the deck inside?

Doc,I fixed the problem with the loose tension,it was a simple fix,as you probably know. But again thank you for your previous advice.

How about from an outboard pwr. supply/preamp that is already connected to the head?
