Reel to Reel Tape Machines / German Studer/Revox information portal
« on: April 17, 2007, 10:45:13 AM »
I finally found the English translation of German Studer/Revox information portal and its: http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?hl=en&u=http://www.studerundrevox.de/sitemap_en.htm

I had been using Google translation services, but the english language site is soooo much easier!!!

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this....Hopkins

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / ATR 102's?
« on: April 05, 2007, 11:19:48 AM »
Which format would you go for in an ATR 102, 1/4" or 1/2", given the context of home audiophile/studio?  I've got more then a few 1/4" machines, and am intrigued with the idea of getting a 1/2" machine to make really specially dubs to.  I know that two 1/4" tracks hold more analog information then two 1/8" tracks, but how much of that information is translated into actual listening?

Also, how much would I be looking at if I wanted to get a "working" ATR 102 and where's the best place to look for one?

Thanks in advance for thoughts....Hopkins

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / PR99
« on: April 04, 2007, 09:59:31 PM »
A friend pointed this PR99 on ebay.  Gorgeous pictures, but I can't believe the price!!!!  It's eq'd for IEC, so it would make a great machine for the Tape Project, but that's still a high price I think....

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Studer B67
« on: April 03, 2007, 11:33:18 AM »
I've managed to acquire a Studer B67 that appears, via photo's, to be in good shape that I'm having sent to Jack Clark in Tennessee for refurbishing.

I can't seem to find much information about this particular Studer model, other then it seems to come in a lot of configurations and a lot of them were made.  I'm hoping that since a lot of them were made that all the bugs were worked out of it, like the PR99???  This particular model is 1/2" 2-track and I think it has an IEC EQ switch.  Can anyone tell me more the B67's or where I read more about them?

Service Resources / Studer service
« on: March 26, 2007, 12:29:18 PM »
Hi...I received the attached lists of folks providing service for Studer machines from the Harman Pro North America rep.

Jack Clark at JM Technical Arts does some Studer work...I'm putting my bets on him and having a B67 I won on Ebay sent to him for service.  I'll let folks know how that goes...

Prerecorded Tapes / Level problems with pre-records??
« on: February 21, 2007, 04:41:10 AM »
Is it my imagination or do some pre-records have mismatiched channel levels?  I'm not sure if its' just the way vu meters respond to various frequencies or really mismatched signal levels in the right and left channels on some of my pre-records...

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Otari III
« on: February 11, 2007, 11:16:34 AM »
Hey gang -- I saw this Otari III when doing my usual e-bay check and thought I'd point it out as it seems there's is a lot of II's, but hardly any III's.

Also, this one doesn't appear to have been riden too hard....

General Discussion / Colour-coding leaders...
« on: February 09, 2007, 05:18:14 PM »
Is there an "industry-standard" leader colour-coding scheme for identifying the lead-in and tail-end sections of tapes?

Also, is there any difference in using blue, clear, or other colours of splicing tape when splicing tape?

I'm probably asking a really newbie question...thanks

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Rack/Cart deck mounting...
« on: January 31, 2007, 01:03:14 PM »
Do folks use patch bays for I/O's for decks installed in racks?  I've got Furman Iso-bars and I'm thinking it'd make life a lot easier on my back if I used one of them for I/O.  What I'm not sure about is the pamphlet says there's issues running instruments or mics thru the patch-bay and I don't know if that's specific to the Iso-bar or patch-bays in general?

Thanks...Hopkins

Prerecorded Tapes / Tips for playing virgin pre-records?
« on: January 28, 2007, 01:01:17 PM »
I recently acquired an unplayed copy of Janis Ian's "Secret Life of J. Eddy Fink" and wondered if there's any tips folks have for playing new copies of really old ampex tapes.  I'm sure there's some print-thru after having sat around for 30 or so years and have read that you can get rid of it by fast fwd/rewinding tapes a few times, but doesn't seem to help in praxis...

General Discussion / Non-vinyl audio sources for RTR
« on: January 26, 2007, 06:59:29 PM »
As a newbie, I've been looking for non-vinyl sources of audio to capture with my reel to reels and am interested in learning what other folks are capturing.

Other then pre-recorded rtrs', the only other sources I've found so far are Wolfgang's Vault (http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/) and KEXP (http://www.kexp.org).  I'm not sure exactly what format Wolfgang's streaming is, but I don't think its' MP3 and KEXP has streaming, uncompressed audio.  Granted, their digital, but they sound great when "calmed-down" by the tape medium...

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Fair prices for RTR machines
« on: January 23, 2007, 12:39:33 AM »
What's fair price for decks in good condition?  I've been told it's between $500-$1000, depending on the deck.  Studer's of course seem to be in the 1-3k range it seems....
