Suggestion Box / Fantasy library access...? Creedence Clearwater Revival?
« on: September 23, 2007, 04:13:18 PM »
Yesterday, I learned that the Tape Project has access to parts of the Fantasy Catalogue thanks to Paul!  I don't know if anyone else is interested or not, but I floated a question about getting some Creedence Clearwater as a way of getting some Rock'n'Roll into the catalogue?

I've been listening to some CCR on 4-track and have been pleasantly surprised at how good it sounds and suspect the engineering on them aren't half-bad.  I'm particularily interested in the first album and Cosmo's Factory, but would be greatful to get any of them on 15ips 468 tape....best, Hopkins

Service Resources / Re: Studer service

Hi all --- it looks like no activity on this thread in 120days...hmmm...FYI, if you need Studer work in the Bay Area, you might want to contact Angel Gentchev.  He's pretty busy these days with a 9-5 job, but he seems to really know Studers and has been great in reviving mine from the brink of UPS damage.  He has a store on ebay under reelproaudio and he has a web site at:  http://www.reelproaudio.com/  I don't know how up to date his site is, but I see its' still there....

I bought my first machine from him and he's been great steering me along...I have to laugh because when I first met him, he wanted to sell me an A810 which I couldn't even comprehend.  Anyhow, its' a year later and I have one!!!

Thanks Ironbut for reminding me to update this!

Steve -- I forgot to mention that I've been using the LPB35, along with the 468 and they both sound great.  Angel grumbled a bit when I had him set the bias for them on my two Studers...he said that 457 was better, at least on Studer's.  Contextual, if there's any difference to me the 468 seems a bit more open and less smeared, while the 456 sounds a bit warmer to me....Hopkins

Hey Steve -- I like the B67 an awful lot...its' kind of like my first "real" tape deck.  It's a big, heavy beast that sometimes burps and breathes a bit of fire, but she's got great sound and handles tape very gently.  It appears that if your careful and the ebay gods are smiling down on you that you can pick one up for a decent price that's in good shape.

I was looking at the IEC switches for the B67 and it appears you can set them to use IEC for 15ips and NAB for 7 1/2 ips....didn't I read somewhere that IEC is best for 15ips and NAB works better for 7 1/2 ips?

Thanks Doc for letting me know I wasn't dreaming it and the tip about modern tape formulations.  I'm a bit of a tape elitist don't use anything but new tape...

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / IEC crisper sounding????
« on: September 17, 2007, 12:16:27 PM »
Hi all...per my last post, I've started to switch over recording things using IEC rather then NAB eq.  I'm not sure if its' my ears or not, but things sound crisper and the high-end seems to have less smearing and more detail?

I seem to remember Angel telling me that the only difference between the two to his ears was this crispness...but then I might have dreamt that too...

At this rate, I'm going to be tearing into my B67 to sort out switching it over to IEC sooner then later.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Studer A810
« on: September 17, 2007, 02:03:04 AM »
Thanks to Angel Gentchev in Fremont, I now have my Studer A810 up and running!  It was pretty roughly handled by UPS on the way up from Southern Cal, where its' former owner lives.  It also took me awhile to get over the trauma and locate a few parts I needed to replace, namely a bent spindle and hum shield cover, before I felt comfortable turning it over to him for a check-up...

The good news it all is that Angel tells me the heads are in fabu shape with minimal use, as is the rest of the machine...someone is looking out for me!!!!  I was sure that I'd been taken in this deal, but the sellor was very ethical and refunded part of my cost and shipping.

Now that my 810 is up and running, I'm re-recording alot of tape collection, using the IEC EQ setting.  For good or bad, I've decided to start using IEC for 7 1/2 and 15ips....

Tape Project Machines / Re: Old topic reel spacers

Kewl...I managed to collect three of the Technics pads and find them really useful to make sure my tape path is free of any rubs.  Practically speaking, it seems that the different thicknesses of plastic and metal reals, combined with flange warpage make it challenging to maintain a free-flowing path without the little guys...Hopkins

So does that mean it affects both recording and playback, or just playback?

Thanks...Hop

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / IEC and NAB eq...
« on: June 27, 2007, 01:57:09 PM »
Hi all...given that I've got 6 decks that get used fairly frequently, I'm wondering what the effect of having them all set to IEC eq will be?  I'm thinking that the eq is recording only, so that it shouldn't effect the playback of the majority of collection?  Am I understanding this correctly?

Prerecorded Tapes / Re: Pink Floyd on Pre-recorded RTR?
« on: June 01, 2007, 01:40:12 PM »
Thanks!!!  It means that they're just eluding me.

Also, is it all the tapes from MagTec that are 7 1/2 ips?  That seems to be the story on Black Sabbath...I think?

Prerecorded Tapes / Pink Floyd on Pre-recorded RTR?

Hi all...was any Pink Floyd ever available on Pre-recorded RTR?  I never see any on ebay and sometimes it seems a bit conspicuous in its' absence so to speak...Hop
