Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: NAB hub adapter question
« on: October 21, 2009, 07:50:58 AM »
I purchased a set of Darklab hubs in candy apple red from Jeff Jacobs, to replace the stock hubs on my Technics RS1500. Mine were $250 for the pair. They are well made and work as well as the stock hubs, with the benefit of fitting the hand nicely when manually turning reels during the threading process and splicing work. They are also very appealing from a visual perspective too. They dress the front of the deck nicely and there are a lot of great color choices available from Darklab.

The "Exotic Dances" and "Suite Espanola" have been getting the most spin on my system as well. They truly do represent what I consider to be demo/reference level recordings of the highest order.

"Waltz for Debbie" gets a lot of play too, but with my Walker TT/Allnic H3000/Verito Z playback setup reproducing "Waltz" at 45 rpm the differences are more shades of grey and a little too tough to call a fave.

I expect to get the High-Rez files of "Exotic Dances" and put it to the test with the tape shortly.

Joe:

You really need to get the Bottlehead Repro to make a fair [esp pricewise] comparison between the LP and tape! I've done both with a tube rolled Repro vs the cj GAT/TEA 1bc combo and a VPI Reference Superscoutmaster (sitting on a Silent Running Audio base atop the Silent Running Audio Craz rack) with either the Air Tight PC-1 or Titan i cartridges -- and as good as the lp is, the tape is far, far better. And having had both, the Repro is far, far better than the Seduction. No comparison, esp. after substituting some NOS Tele EF86s or 806S and amperex E188CC/7308. Plus theres a ton more gain with the Repro that makes the tapes a lot quieter sounding.

Myles:
Your right, of course. I really do need to go with the Repro. One of my complaints with the Seduction, as good as it is, has been issues with gain. I have been spending resources optimizing my vinyl playback. All things considered, 2500.00 worth of reel playback hardware, giving a vinyl rig somewhere north of 50K a run for its money, sure says a lot about the software, wouldn't you say?

I gotta talk to Doc about a Repro.

it's a tie between Exotic Dances and the Albeniz-Suite Espanola.....they are both so dynamic and involving. 'Waltz' had been a 'first choice' demo disc for so many years in 45rpm vinyl that i sorta don't seem to choose it often even though it is wonderfull and the one (from the first series) i'm most connected with.

i suspect that going forward The Staple Singers will take their places as the most played as it is just a perfect recording of such compelling music. it just overwhelms your senses and takes your breath away in my system.

OTOH the demo tape i heard in Philip O'Hanlon's room at RMAF showed just how good 'The Sermon' and the 'Coltrane-Burrell' will be.......so stay tuned.

General Discussion / Re: RMAF

Well-
I fully intended on the 2:00 PM rendezvous, but the kerfuffle with the power at around that time kind threw me off my game. Mike Lavigne and I hooked up for a listening session earlier that day in the United Audio/ARC/Nola room for some TP Staples Singers on their modded Tascam deck. Sounded really big really clean and really funky.

On the non-tape side of things, the ARC/Vandersteen/Linn Sondek vinyl playback was superb, as was the Ypsilon/Tidal room, playing LPs on the new Bergmann Airbearing TT.

What was really cool for me was running into Paul Stubblebine in the Vandersteen suite.

My fifth RMAF, and over way too soon.

My tape was at the door today when I got home from work. Just finished the A reel, and really can't add anything that Mike didn't already say. While the Staples are not normally part of my heavy rotation of listening, I just got sucked into the vortex created by the bass. That is some of the most infectious funk playing I've heard. The space, air and width in and around the voice and instruments of "I'll Take You There" was mesmerizing, as was the lyrical content of "Respect Yourself". I don't have LP versions to compare it too though.

Suggestion Box / Re: Suggestion for Series 3

I do like the idea of the monumental Mahler 1st. I have been exploring more of Mahler's work of late, spending some time with the Mehta/Vienna 2nd on London (Super Analogue Disc reissue KIJC-9139). I like Solti's interpretation of the 1st, also on London.

The cover is clean front and back, except for a price sticker on the front top left from Princeton Record Exchange (Damn them). Otherwise, it's in really nice shape. A little Goo Gone might remove it without a trace. If you want, I can send it to you to judge for yourself....

I think I do, Doc. I'll check when I get home. I have two copies, one I think is in rough shape, but I believe one is in really good shape.

Thanks Doc. I just got my UPS shipping notice today. You guys are doing a great job!! Now I just have to sit on my front porch until the 30th....

I got my alignment tape but not my take up reel

Doc in the past I have received UPS notification that the tapes have been shipped. You indicated that my TP010 has shipped but I have never received UPS notification of such. Are you shipping them differently now as I still have not received mine

I'm with Steve. I did get an alignment tape, but did not get a take up reel.

Tape Project Albums - general / Re: Four more titles for Series Two!
« on: August 11, 2009, 07:45:04 PM »
Nice way to round out series two!! I am sure that TP will do great justice to Linda Ronstadt's voice on "Heart Like a Wheel".

"Stage Fright" was one I didn't see comin'

Who an argue with an RVG Blue Note?

Doc- I have to agree with what you just said above. I am listening to LP versions of it tonight on my Walker TT, and the piano mic (if there is one) seems really rolled off up top. I suspect it is being mic'd on the recording because when the piano solos come around, there is no way that the sax or drum mics are picking up spill only, but it is really rolled off. Looking forward to spinning the tape when it arrives next week.

Tape Project Albums - general / Re: A milestone!

Mr UPS man sent me an email yesterday to tell me TP 010 is on it's way to the Philadelphia area!! If it were not so hot and humid, I would hang out in the shrubbery by the house waiting for the big brown truck. I guess I don't have to, as one of my dogs can recognize the sound of the UPS truck 1/4 mile away and starts barking until it either stops at our house or goes on by.

Thanks again to Doc, Romo and Paul for all your hard work and dedication to make sure we all get our tapes. Your labor of love has spread a lot of great music to a lot of audiophiles, and for that we are all very grateful.
