Tape Tech / Re: Studer meter bulb replacement
« on: December 30, 2015, 11:29:45 AM »
There was a standard for that buff color one sees on classic VU meters, but I can't seem to google it. The color temp of the meter lighting no doubt influenced the decision when it was established, and that light source would of course have used tungsten filaments. The spectral bandwidth of white LEDs is somewhat limited, and I don't think you will be able to match the color temp of the original tungsten filaments exactly. White leds in general are rather more blue than direct sunlight, up around 6000K - 6500K vs about 2700K for tungsten bulbs. Amber LEDs are pure yellow-orange, typically around 592 nM, which would probably be too intense yellow color-wise. What you might want is a warm white led, which is an attempt at matching the tungsten filament spectrum and typically around 2700-3000K.

There is a circuit mod to make bass flat (IEC)

That's pretty tough to do because there is no agreed upon bass rolloff for IEC. The bass boost in the IEC curve theoretically goes to infinity at 0 Hz. So a designer has to pick some arbitrary bass rolloff frequency while considering the limit of the repro amp gain structure and call it good. We use around 17Hz in our repro amps, just below the generally accepted lower frequency threshold and not so low as to require a ton of gain. Chances are that's what the mod does, an approximation to make the response mostly flat.

General Discussion / Couple of fun links - old tape magazines

This may have been posted before, but I just stumbled upon some great archives of US and UK tape recording magazines from the 50s thru 70s with nice high quality scans:

Thanks for the great review Myles! As we fully transition from our original subscription model to the current and more easily accessed online purchase model with our next release, we hope to be able to drop more surprises on our supporters in the coming months.

Tape Project Machines / Re: bypassing preamp on otari mx 5050

Shawn Phelps did the original MX-5050 mod at Bottlehead. I'll ask him if maybe he can take a pic or two of his deck showing which cables you need to move.

A quick update - tickets have been selling pretty quickly for both dates. We have sold out the shows we have done the past two years, so if you plan to attend you may want to purchase your tickets soon.

Events / Jacqui Naylor and Art Khu live recording at Bottleheadquarters
« on: November 09, 2015, 02:27:06 PM »
We have some very exciting news! Jacqui Naylor and Art Khu will be back in December for another concert at Bottleheadquarters on beautiful Bainbridge Island. The dates are December 4th and 5th with a 7:30 start time. Please arrive a bit early for some nosh and beverages, as we will need to seat everyone before the recording session begins. Each of the very intimate shows Jacqui and Art have put on in past years at BHQ has sold out. In 2015 we made a last minute decision to experiment with a live recording to tape of the performance with very promising results. This year we will be doing a live mix "on the fly" via a vintage Altec all tube console to our world famous Bottlehead modified Nagra T Audio tape recorder. So if you want to experience a live jazz recording session with the flavor of those fabulous mixed on the fly jazz club recordings of the 50s and 60s, and meet two amazing artists in a very up close and personal (just two dozen seats) venue, don't miss this show!

Tickets for Friday, December 4th show

Tickets for Saturday, December 5th show

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Otari MX5050 MKIII Question
« on: November 08, 2015, 12:43:01 PM »
Long ago Akai/Roberts made 2 track machines that could do what you are thinking of - sort of. They called it "sound on sound". I think that the erase head was simply disabled in that mode and thus you could record on top of a recorded track. In theory with enough fooling around one could possibly selsync playback (only way things will stay in sync, you can't bounce from a separate playback head) track one and record it over material on track two, thus creating a 1+2 mixed to mono track 2, so you could record new stuff on track one. Obviously it did not work well enough that everyone else started offering it on their decks.

We will certainly reserve the serial number of any charter subscriber who kept up their subscription through all three series and continues to acquire the new albums as they come out.

Yes, the titles are a secret. We plan to stay with our stepped up schedule and release the next one in quarter one 2016. We will release one more series title after that. That will be number TP030 in quarter two, which will fulfill Series Three subscription for those awesome folks who supported us through the early years of the reel to reel tape comeback. After that album ships to Series Three subscribers the series model will be retired and we will do our best to keep all titles with an active license in stock. If all goes as planned we will continue to release a new title every quarter, and they will be available from the online store upon that release.
