I'm afraid the only thing that could save Studer is $$$$$$$$$$
Making Harmon an offer they couldn't refuse.

Pity Bill Gates is not a fan.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Re: Crusty C37
« on: October 06, 2009, 03:36:26 AM »
Well, one experienced UK user told me that a lot of the C37s here were cannibalised for parts to keep others in work 25 or more years ago.

He suggests that unless one can get certain unobtamium parts machined to avoid taking on the "pineapple" therefore unless my pal's trade contacts come up trumps I guess we will just have to carry on looking.

That machine in Korea looks perfect. The stuff of dreams.

Having just imported a near-as-damn perfect restored Ampex 300 and still buying mics we can't afford to be too precipitate right now.

Reel to Reel Tape Machines / Crusty C37
« on: October 05, 2009, 10:06:34 AM »
This has been unearthed from the back of someone's garage. The current owner describes the top deck as "rough as a pineapple"!

How does this rate as a challenge?
Easy? Moderate? Difficult? Hard Difficult?...

Any pointers?

Thanks.

General Discussion / Re: Equalization curves

That's the spirit Jay! The music's the thing. All else is incidental :o)
Tho' the technical stuff can be fun - in moderation ;o)

First page, second paragraph, last sentence:

...for 7.5ips NAB equalization is the better choice in combination with modern tape formulas.

However, since the article is about a NAB to IEC filter solely for 15ips, which he states is the speed where IEC is superior to NAB, he does not elaborate.

I'm of the opinion that life is too short to agonize over such gnat's whiskers and I am sure I will enjoy my 7.5ips IEC transcriptions from CD sources. I always get too engrossed in the music to listen forensically but that just me :o)

I'm in the UK so pretty much all available machines record to the IEC curve.

Jay, have you read Arian Jansen's article?

http://laocaudiosociety.net/tech/NABtoIEC.pdf

He claims NAB superior for 7.5 ips.

Actually Jay "15 ips" was a play on that earlier thread regarding recording LPs to tape. In practice I too will be having the transfers done at 7 1/2 since most CDs will nicely fill a single 10 1/2" reel at that speed. These transfers will be using IEC.

Rumour has it that they can benefit from a little ferric oxide ;o)

I have several favourite CDs of music which is unlikely to be re-released on vinyl and there is something soothing about spinning spools.
Maybe they boost alpha waves in the brain....

The Emitape for nostalgia (memories of warm BTR/2s), the BASF for it's quiet understatement of quality.

For 7" I find the BASF little bro' cute...

Now and again I will be playing tapes from the Ampex on the IEC PR99. I could fiddle about and perhaps convert the Interface Connector to take a dongle (anyone done this?) but since the need will be, at the very most, once a week or so maybe I could procure a 7.5/15 NAB repro board and simply swap as needed. So if anyone's got one gathering dust..... ;o)

Now here's a funny thing, the machine is 7.5/15 IEC but the chassis says...

Well, my studio-owner pal was here today picking up the Nagra and admitted he had only just put in the valves but hadn't yet fired it up. Working up the courage! Shouldn't be be any problems, it was well crated for its journey across the pond.

It's an early Fifties Ampex 300 full-track, 15 & 30 ips. Many great hits and jazz classics were mastered on these 'bathtubs'.
It takes it's place alongside a 3M M79 and Studer A80, the latter will be out on its ear when a long-awaited C37 materialises.
The studio is small but quite nicely equipped with vintage gear including Telefunken mic amps, Universal Audio compressors, EMT plate reverb, AKG C12, Neumann KM56 & U67 (nice long body U47 currently with Peter Gefehl in Germany for fettling), Schoeps 221 and Coles 4038 mics. Looking for a good Neumann M49 and (we can dream!) an undamaged Altec 639 birdcage.

Early days yet but the ball is rolling with 1st album recorded there getting good reviews in the press.
Wish I was younger and fitter to be more actively involved than I am :(

I much prefer the plain vanilla take-up spool. Cool & conservative.

BTW, this wonderful old war horse has just been delivered to the studio. Beautiful resto job.

Hence the need for a IEC/NAB switch on the PR99.

Thanks Ken, the chap who sold it told me how easy it is. Took less than 5 minutes :o)

Does anybody else think the multicolour BASF spool rather ghastly?
