Some Female Vocal Suggestions
« on: April 12, 2008, 04:48:00 PM »
Sarah Mclachlan: The freedom sessions or fumbling towards ecstasy

Norah Jones: Not too late or Come away with me

Joni Mitchell: Blue or Court and Spark

Gillian Welch: Time the revelator and Revival

K.D. Lang: Ingenue or Shadowland

Rickie Lee Jones: Rickie Lee Jones or Pirates

Bonnie Rait: luck of the draw or nick of time

Natalie Merchant: Ophelia

Anne Sofie Von Otter: Marian Cantatas and Arias (Handel) (first heard this in an Avantgarde demo at CES, great music and recording)

-----

while I'm at it:

Miles Davis: kind of blue (make a lot) some day my prince will come

John Coltrane: many, but e.g. a love supreme

Willy Nelson: stardust (a classic)

Lyle Lovett: live in texas and step in this house

Neil Young: greatest hits, comes a time, ... many

Knopfler/Harris: all the roadrunning

Tom Waits: Nightwawks at the diner and heart of saturday night

James Taylor: greatest hits + many

All of these are recorded well enough to be demo material, but they are musically great as well!

I would like to add some Warner titles.
Emmylou Harris Roses In the Snow and Angel Band,
The Roches self titled and
(not female vocal) Brothers in Arms Dire Straits
Are these all old enough too be analog masters?
Steve Williams

you don't want to know what equipment I listen to...

Some great choices above. I love the idea of "Blue" as well as Rickie Lee Jones' first LP. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my LP reissue of that one. I've just about worn out my original pressing of that one.

I think Gillian Welch would be superb!!

Norah Jones' Come Away With Me would be nice as well.

A good read here on tape mastering vs digital.
PS. I found this by accident on google search today, but I hope you enjoy it.

Linda Ronstadt did 3 lp's with Nelson Riddle back in the early eighties:

"Whats' New"
"Lush Life"
"For Sentimental Reasons"

Her vocals are at their peak, the band is wonderful. The dynamics on vinyl are excellent. It would be a nice big artist score if you could get the masters!
