Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section
« on: April 14, 2008, 08:32:44 PM »
In honor of the latest eBay tape frenzy. If you didn't see it, a 2 track version of this sold for $457. Well, I was going to bid $50 but thought better of it since it is out of the Fantasy catalog. Many consider it to be Pepper's best and he's joined by my all time favorite support personal. Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. One of the great products from the marriage of the Ampex 350 and the u47.

I guess eBay's good for something!

I agree on this one!  $457 is too rich for my blood for a 40 year old tape sight-unseen off Epay.  It's a classic.....

I am going to assume that the person who paid that price for the Art Pepper tape is not aware they could have put that money towards the purchase of two offerings by the Tape Project. What a pity.

Ok, here's my 2 cents on this. Since I own several different versions of this recording, including both the AP 45 reissue (which is now $100) and the 2 track, I have done direct comparisons of these, and on a good high end system both have strengths and weaknesses. I think it depends more on your priorities in sound as to which one is better.

When the general public looks at what we spend on our machines and tapes here, they say basically the same thing about us as has been said in this topic about the high price of this 2 track. People in glass houses...

I don't agree. I think averyone would consider very sane to put $2k a year into 10 records you have not even heard before!

Dan

Dan has a great point there. The main reason I started getting into reel to reel (this time around at least) was the differences I heard (at the time on old 7.5 ips 1/4 tracks only) from the better vinyl that I usually listened to. As Dan stated, each has it's strengths.
I think we can all agree that when these tapes sell for as much as this one did, that we're talking collectors here. They don't want a shinny new release as much as a shinny old one. That's OK with me unless it drives up prices permanently.
But, not that I mind the slight hijacking, this thread is to check for how many of us members would vote for this to be a TP release. There are a few posters who seem interested but haven't stated so specifically.

Steve,
If the intent of this thread topic is to register how many folks would like to have this (or any other) as a TP title, this may not be the most efficient way to do it.

To date it seems more of a free for all, or word association therapy, me included.

Can the webmaster create a spread sheet like window where we can enter a performer and album title and allow the casting of ballots?
Would you buy this title? Y/N ___.   That is pretty straightforward.
This would compliment the present thread, not replace it.
I like to read Robert's odes to fallen jazz artists as much as the next fellow.
At a glance, any interested party could vote their preference(s), and view results in one place at one time visually.

Some forum software has a poll feature. Don't know if this one does or not. That might be away to vote without developing additional functionality.

Right you are Gary.
I considered that, but I do not know enough about the limitations/features of the poll to know one way or the other.
The other thing was that if the poll feature was able to accommodate the needs of what I propose, I would envision a poll thread dedicated towards title 'voting' rather than setting up separate threads one at a time.  It seems tedious.
I am trying to suggest a format which will make it easier to identify title candidates, and register an interest to purchase in one spot with a minimal amount of effort.
Where is the web master?

From the last choice, I'm figuring that it was ceved that posted that poll. If not, you have my deepest apologies!

I am a bit at a loss to determine where we are if anywhere from the two immediately preceding posts.
Was there some off line correspondence?
If the one comment was to indicate the lack of response an old poll received, perhaps it was the topic.
I would think that you should get at least a vote per charter/associate member for a subject of whether or not they would  buy a particular title.
That would be especially true if the opportunity was easy to find, and easy to record.
The operative word is easy.
I for one never thought to give a commitment since my assumption was that the suggestions were for the benefit of the TP honchos to give them ideas to work from to decide future releases.
I would be happy to indicate if I would buy a title if I am familiar with the title.
Is a clarification on this thread in order, or it is just me?
Steve, exactly how deep are your apologies?
