They are called tape lifters, and they may need some adjustment.

Tape Project Machines / Re: User Manual for Technics RS1520?

Original post is 8 years old. The fact that you responded to a request 8 years after your original post is very kind of you, and also exceptionally rare. Thus it is generally considered proper netiquette for the second poster to have started a new thread rather than trying to revive a dead one.

It will depend somewhat upon the strength of the magnets in the speakers, but in general the setup you describe sounds OK.

I would suggest that if you want the sound of a studio tape machine, buy a studio tape machine like an AG440 or A80. Using 456 will be a very dicey proposition because the majority of it suffers from sticky shed. I would lean toward buying current production tape from ATR Magnetics or RMGI/Pyral for recording anything of value.

Hold the reels to tension the tape and press stop.

Another tip - put the machine in load mode when you turn it off.

Tape Project Albums - general / Re: Tp 029 and 030

One recording we hope to release was done just a few months ago and will be getting edited this fall. That one will probably be ready for release by year's end. Paul has been out of the country the past month. Regarding classic recordings from major labels - he had requested a couple of titles before he left, and will be working on them when he returns.

In the meantime we have been working to keep all of our currently licensed titles in stock. It's a very good time for anyone who might want to pick up a title or two from their wish list.

Tape Tech / Re: 1 mil 1/2" Tape Question
« on: July 22, 2016, 04:09:29 PM »
I dunno, it's a puzzle. Uher SM does not come up for me. I can only find one reference to Uher branded tape, called Z817, and it's a 1/4" 1 mil reel. And I can only find one Uher deck that could use a 10.5" reel, the SG530L, which appears to have been a 1/4" deck. And of course SM911 is 1.5 mil.

I did find an interesting mention of .75 and .5 mil 1/2" tape being developed for video use back in the 70s, in an old scan from Billboard magazine. So it's not impossible that such a beast could exist. Also it looks like BASF 931 was available in 5000 ft. 10.5" reels.

That would pretty much have to be .75 mil tape.

NABET would more likely be NAB EQ.

General Discussion / Re: Studer B67 - help!
« on: March 25, 2016, 09:09:47 AM »
My first thought is that you may have some power supply capacitors that are leaking and need to be replaced.

28
Sounds like the new bearing needs some adjustment or lubricant, or both.

Here's an Otari ad showing the tape threaded under the floating post, like your first picture.
