Title: Live recording La Boheme 2/16/74
Post by: Zen82378 on May 14, 2016, 08:39:04 AM
I found a live recording of la Boheme r2r. It has a sticker on it that says NABET has a LCL number and the initials of the recording engineer. Sticker on back says nbc recording services. any info would be helpful.

NABET would more likely be NAB EQ.

Could this be a recording from the live show?

I googled Live Performance, La Boheme February 16, 1974 and came up with a live performance with Caballe and Corelli at the Met (Metropolitan Opera in NYC). Available as a 2 CD album on Amazon.  It could well have been recorded by NBC.  However, the version on Amazon appears to be a pirate.  Caballe and Corelli were two of the best singers of that time period (Freni and Pavarotti are maybe the best and in the Decca/London studio recording with Karajan conducting about the same time - I saw them live in 1967 at the SF Opera in Pavarotti's official American debut.) Anyway, if it has good sound, it should be a real treat.

What is the recording - hopefully 15ips 2 track?   Should be about 90 minutes long or a bit more if it is complete.

NABET is the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians (NABET-CWA), a labor union representing employees in television, radio, film, and media.

Does this sticker mean that it could be of good quality or is it just a common sticker found

Don't know about the meaning of the sticker.  What are the numbers after LCL.  LCL was used by London (Decca) in their prerecorded tapes.  However, this is almost certainly not a Decca engineered album.  Are the tapes on the big 10.5" reels or 7" reels, and how many of them are there?  That would tell you the speed of recordings and whether it is complete.  Larry

I can't post pics for some reason.  Files are too big.  Do you have an email I can send to?

This one is 7".  I have others as well.  Different artists/recordings. Ranging from classical to live broadway plays to spoken word to live shows to the original variations of the Bing Bang Bong by Don Gillis (smaller reel)

Thanks.  Probably not a very good recording, since it is recorded at 3 3/4ips on a 7" reel.  If it is 1.5 mil tape, it probably 45-50 minutes on each side, so the whole opera is on one reel.  Possible if 1 mil that the entire opera is on one side.

NABET organized the technicians and engineers at two of the major broadcast networks (back when there were three) NBC and ABC. For some reason CBS was organized by IBEW, the International Brotherhood of Electrical workers.

That's how I became a brother in good standing of the IBEW back when I worked at a studio that was part of CBS Records, which was part of CBS Inc at the time.

Of course CBS Records, which included Columbia and Epic, was sold to SONY some years later, and is now SONY/BMG.

Anyway, your NABET label only indicates that your tape was made by a union engineer.
