Piper: It was a pleasure meeting you and talking with you. Paul: It was nice seeing you again. Mike L:
As always, really nice catching up with you too.

Anyone know what's going on in Iowa?

Even if I did I'm not sure that I would admit to it.

Got my shipping notice on the 28th of July with delivery for today, August 3rd. Checked the UPS tracking service and discovered the tape was only in Davenport, Iowa. Tracking updated stated: "Adverse Weather Conditions". Tape had only gone from WA state to Iowa in 6 days and now is stuck there. Anyone know what's going on in Iowa?

Steve-

Thanks for the link to the gallery. Done my share of remote work, having spent the better part of 20 years following the Grateful Dead around, lugging ever more sophisticated portable rigs. Finally coming off the road in 2001 after making the post 1995 transition from the Dead to Phish. When I finally stopped live show taping, my rig was worth more than my vehicle: Matched pair of AKG 460s, matched pair of AKG 414s, an older pair of Nakamichi cm100 with the shotgun capsules> Grace Designs Lunatec V2 preamp>Apogee AD1000 a/d converter>Tascam DA P1 digital deck. All this cabled up with Audio Magic cables and running on Eco-charge rechargeable battteries, along with a 15 ft and a 20 ft mic stand with various mounts for different mic configurations.

It got to the point where going to shows was more like going to work. I do however, have a lot of great memories, lots of great tapes and met a lot of interesting folks along the way...

Received my copy the other day, and finally had a chance to listen to Reel A. I have a question: was this cut at a lower level than the LP? It seems as though the volume level is lower on the tape than the LP forcing my gain control way up in order to attain the same impactful dynamics as on the LP.

The decay time on the Tam Tam is truly impressive, as are the deep bass notes of the drum whacks at the end.

Rock With Me Baby / Re: first impressions of TP-017, 'Rock With Me Baby'

Is it live, or is it Little Hatch? This one is waaaay realistic!! Watching Earl roll up the coast and listening to TP tapes. What a great way to kick off Labor Day. That said - if I had any balls, my daughter and I would be on our surf boards, ridin' Earl's waves. But common sense and Little Hatch win this round.

But seriously folks, this tape is really good.

I think this release would put an end to any digital vs analog argument too. This kind of full bodied sound is where all the math in the world just can't keep up. Maybe when they have Giga bit word length or something. But the texture is so dense and the snap is so clean, and it all happens in the same temporal slice.

Was there ever an argument? Not in my mind anyway.

Am listening to a new phono stage that is showing just how extraordinary the analog medium can be when recorded and mastered :)

OK Myles-

Don't keep us guessing. What's the phono stage?? More on topic: I got the UPS notice on my copy of "Stage Fright" yesterday. Really looking forward to doing a head to head with an original pressing LP.

General Discussion / Been away for a while
« on: March 17, 2010, 01:28:09 PM »
It's been 2 months since I read or posted here. I became quite ill in mid January and spent over a month in the hospital. during that time, two tapes arrived (Linda and Burrell/Coultrane), so I have lots of catching up to do. At any rate, it's good to be back, and getting caught up on the goings on here.

Brilliant Corners / Re: Brilliant Corners is a gem!
« on: November 15, 2009, 01:54:23 PM »
Well said Mike! I have listened to the tape 3 times through in the last couple of days. The Celeste positively sparkles on the tape, as good as it comes across on the LP (I only have and original pressing 33, have not heard the 45 rpm version), there is an other earthly shimmer going on on the tape. a real lights-down-low, bottle-of-bordeaux kind of experience.

"Brilliant Corners" is indeed brilliant!! Mine arrived about 1 hour ago, and it's spinning as I write this. Dead true to the LP, with so much more body and weight, especially in the drums. Another home run guys! Right away, I can tell this one is going to spend a lot of time mounted on the deck.

The artwork looks pretty good too ;)
